Behind Her Eyes is a thriller web series created by Steve Lightfoot. It stars Simona Brown, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, and Robert Aramayo in main roles. It has a total of 6 episodes and was released on 17 February 2021 on Netflix.
The story is about a single mother Louise (Simona Brown) who one night had an unusual meet-up with a man David (Tom Bateman) finds herself in a complex and awkward situation when he turns out to be her new boss. David is a psychiatrist and now Louise works as a secretary for him. They try to have a fresh start here and not to bring that night in any conversation. Yet the attraction is uncontrollable for them and they start to spend lovely nights together. One day, Louise bumps into Adele (Eve Hewson), wife of David, who befriends Louise and they spend their free time doing shopping and gym. But something is not right in Adele and David's marriage as Adele is on medications and David keeps calling the landline to see whether Adele is at home or not. Is Adele hiding something? Or is it David who's hiding something from Louise and Adele? Everything will be clear after watching all six episodes.
Based on the 2017 novel, Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough, and Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna serving as the writer of the show did an amazing job here with limited characters and a story that grows on you with every episode. It has an intriguing storyline where it holds your interest throughout and you'll keep guessing what's going on? Is something wrong with Adele? Or is it David who's the villain here? And you will feel pity for Louise, a single mother, living with her only son Adam (Tyler Howitt) and getting sandwiched between David and Adele.
David keeps telling her not to meet Adele as he doesn't know how but Adele knows everything. Adele was a drug addict herself before marriage and became close to Rob (Robert Aramayo), both lonely, love to spend time with each other. We also get to see how Adele and David met, how David became rich, and the truth about how Adele's parents died. The writers did a commendable job for creating such fine characters and showing very little without giving any hint that it would have something supernatural to show in the climax which at first might feel clunky when it was explained in the show but I can't deny that it was shocking and entertaining and nobody could have predicted that, for those who have not read the book.
Tom Bateman as David was effective and good with his expressions and charming Scottish accent. It was Simona Brown and Eve Hewson who nailed her parts with perfection. Simona Brown played Louise with earnestness bringing out the awkwardness of working with David and having a friendship with his wife and the emotions of a mother. Eve Hewson builds a mysterious vibe around her, the way she talks, her laughs, and her chilling expressions. She is just brilliant. Tyler Howitt as Adam is sweet and has done fine work, Robert Aramayo as Rob leaves his mark with his strong presence and Georgie Glen as Sue is good.
The cinematography by Felix Wiedemann is simply stunning. In the landscapes of Scotland or the night terrors, the camera work flawlessly and evokes feelings of pity, shock, and eerie. The production design and set decoration are also very good and of high quality. The music by amazing Rupert Gregson-Williams fits the unnerving tone of the show. The editing by Amy Hounsell and Brenna Rangott is perfect.
Behind Her Eyes is the perfect mystery show for you to binge on this weekend. It has an intriguing storyline that keeps you on the edge, with its supernatural touch which might feel cumbersome to many, but it keeps you interested throughout in its strange world of solid three characters and doesn't bore you with the slow pace. Stream it, it does have its fair share of amazing scenes in its simple yet affecting story and if you start it, the first episode will bound you to see what it has next.
