Jamun is an Indian Hindi Drama film directed by Gaurav Mehra. It stars Raghubir Yadav, Shweta Basu Prasad Sourav Goyal, and Sunny Hinduja in main roles and was released on 21st January 2021 on Eros Now.
All is not well in the Jamun family as Jamun (Raghubir Yadav), a homeopathic doctor by profession, is trying to find a suitable boy for his daughter Chetna (Shweta Basu Prasad), a young medical student. But almost 6 have already rejected her because of her right squinted eye. Then there's is a jobless son Amar (Sunny Hinduja) who is trying very hard looking for a job but gets caught up in donating his kidney for money so that he could go to Dubai. After the checkup, it is found that Chetna's eye muscles are imbalanced and that's what causing the de-alignment in her eyes and this condition is known as Esotropia. Things turn upside down for this lower-middle-class family after hearing the expense for the eye surgery, which is 2.5 lakh. Jamun starts to tremble in shock and develops the symptoms of Parkinson's. So Chetna will manage her aspiration of becoming a nurse when her father is suffering from Parkinson's disease? Is there someone with a good heart who will accept Chetna?
Written by Gaurav Mehra, Jamun has nothing new to offer but keeping Jamun's family in the spotlight, he manages to tell yet another effective story about a lower-middle-class family and their daily struggles. The film is very sad as if Mehra has forcefully added all these tragic angles of Esotropia and Parkinsons just to break the threshold of the emotional barriers of the audiences.
But you know what's the good thing, Mehra succeeds in doing that. He believably portrays everything and nothing looks artificial here. A family short of money, a jobless son, and a daughter who's getting rejected every time, these tropes work every time as everyone can easily relate to it. The film often provides some comic relief from that hardcore drama that sometimes becomes melodrama. Amar's track was heartbreaking for me, but sadly it didn't contribute anything to the movie.
Despite being predictable, the film has a potential and likeness that will make you sit through this 1.5-hour movie which not a single second bores you. With an extended climax, Mehra delivers a satisfying happy ending for us and Jamun family as you will be too wishing that let there be happiness in this family, they have gone through a lot. The father-daughter bond is the soul of the film which will remind of Piku but sadly it doesn't reach up to that level of brilliance but is effective enough to make you laugh and emotional at times.
Raghubir Yadav is terrific as Jamun. Mehra truly utilized him to the fullest and the result is just fantastic. From body language to voice change, Raghubir Yadav shines whereas Sweta Basu Prasad as Chetna is mind-blowing. She's finally getting the roles that she deserves. In fact, she deserves more and better. She's slowly leaving her mark in OTT movies that's not surprising. Sourabh Goyal as Dr. Kewal and Sunny Hinduja as Amar have given their best.
The cinematography by Siddharth Kale is effortless and provides a very real and natural look to the film and the credit also goes to the production designer Ram Chavhan. The set looks real-like your kitchen, hall, or bathroom. The music and background score by Deepak Arora is decent and the dialogues by Gaurav Mehra and Shweta Basu Prasad are solid. In one scene Chetna asks her father that in which constitution it is written that it's compulsory to marry off your daughter and in reply Jamun says, 'it's the constitution of Indian Society'.
Jamun is a wonderful film by Gaurav Mehra that showcases the challenges and obstacles faced by the middle-class family. Every member of the family has duties and has to dare to become something in their lives. Mehra tries to deliver a sad and affecting story but yet delivers a happy ending that will put a smile on your face. Raghubir Yadav and Shweta Basu Prasad are remarkable in their parts and provides many whole-souled scenes that will make you laugh and cry. It's a film made with a good heart!! Watch this.
