College Romance is an Indian Hindi Comedy Drama web series directed by Apoorv Singh Karki. It stars Manjot Singh, Apoorva Arora, Gagan Arora, Shreya Mehta, and Keshav Sadhna. The second season has a total of 5 episodes and was released on 29th January 2021 on Sony LIV.
The new season starts with Trippy (Manjot Singh) bringing in a new girlfriend Hippy (Aishwarya Chaudhary). The rest are shocked to see Trippy finally move on from Raveena. Hippy is doing psychology honors and always talks in a philosophical way. She takes them to a party where Naira (Apoorva Arora) shares with his boyfriend Bagga (Gagan Arora) that she will be soon leaving for America for further studies. Trippy is still finding his love after messing everything up with Hippy. Whereas Karan's (Keshav Sadhna) and Deepika's (Shreya Mehta) relationship is falling apart as Deepika thinks that boys cannot understand women, as she shares with a sex education teacher. Here we also see Naira, Trippy, and Karan getting through the last year of college. So will Naira and Bagga's long-distance relationship will work or will they break up? Will Deepika understand Karan's love for her? Will Trippy be able to move on from Raveena? This is all about the new season.
Written by Sidhant Mago, season 2 leads the story of these five friends forward but there is nothing new to see what we have already seen in the previous season. TVF has its own fan base for their shows but I have to say it lacks realism. Instead, the shows are just light-hearted and good enough to give you a good time at least. The same we can say for this show, the first season was a blast, the craziness and the fun was the strength there and the likable characters have the charm to make you sit throughout the show.
I was expecting sometime different this time but it delivers nothing fresh or sensible. Only Naira is shown focused on her future of studying abroad and Karan and Trippy are just living their moments to the fullest. Bagga is committed to his and Naira's relationship whereas Deepika is still the angry woman here. It appears quite obvious that makers did want to try an experiment here, showing Trippy is dealing with performance issues and is not getting an erection. But it's so blandly executed that it hardly affects you or your mind. Using words like 'khushi ke aansu' for ejaculation and 'chota bhai' for male genital adds humor but restricts the impact of such strong relevant issues many are facing.
The humor in the first half is amazing. In the last two episodes, the screenplay dips when everything breaks apart between the friends which got my hopes up for what's coming next. But alas everyone just gets together in no time by saying "Sorry, It's okay". It was underwhelming to see the five central characters stuck in the same stale character with no variation at all. Yes, we get a 'sappy' ending where Deepika finally understands how Karan loves her unconditionally. But who knows, Deepika might take a 180-degree turn in the next season.
Manjot Singh has nothing different to offer rather than to appear sweet and funny. He was the same in Fukrey and the first season of this show and so nothing extraordinary. Apoorva Arora as Naira is wonderful and a delight to see the range of expressions she delivers. Gagan Arora is a fine performer and has done a good job as Bagga. His dialogues are filled with cuss words and he appears natural delivering that. Keshav Sadhna is just average but confident as Karan and Shreya Mehta as Deepika brings a laugh with her angry woman persona. I was laughing constantly when Karan says Deepika to call all the students for inviting them to Naira's farewell. Coz the way she talks, it'll quite a treat to see her and it doesn't fail in that one.
The cinematography by Arjun Kukreti and Georgy John is good and gives a new and refreshing look to the show. The production design by Beeva Mahajan is quite nice and the music of Tusshar Mallek fits the tone of the show. The editing by Tushar Manocha is sharp enough to keep you invested.
Overall, College Romance Season 2 feels like an extension of its first season. The first one was a super hit as it had a rawness but sadly the second season has become stale due to the same light treatment. I understand that the makers did want to give you a good time with this show and he succeeds in it as the show is funny and endearing but alas it had nothing new to offer and you'll keep waiting to witness something different but that scene never comes. A decent one time watch.
