Documentaries are a mirror to our society, it connects us all. What compels you to watch it, is the realism and the astonishing facts and information they deliver by showcasing raw images and real-life footage and untouched audios that are a kind of great attraction. Netflix has a huge amount of documentary film and series that covers a comprehensive range of contents from murder mystery to sports to nature documentaries.
Below are given my list of documentary movies or series you can stream on Netflix.
18. My Octopus Teacher.
In 2010, Foster began free diving in underwater in a kelp forest near Cape Town, South Africa. The film shows how an octopus changes him as a person, which he found under a cave. The visuals are great and the movie is heartwarming and the most magical thing to witness.
17. American Murder Family.
This movie will give you the details about the Watts Family murder and that too in-depth by showing you real footage, and raw images which can be disturbing some viewers. It is an effective movie that will leave you unsettling.
16. Inside Bill's Brain.
It is a 3 part docu-series that explores the motivations and minds of Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft. The first episode showcases his work in improving sanitization in developing countries, the second episode shows his work on the eradication of polio from Nigeria, and the third episode deals with climate change and its effects.
15. CoronaVirus Explained.
A three-part docuseries released during the lockdown period due to the coronavirus outbreak, shows what started it and to explore the ideas on how to stop it. This is a worth watching series, to get to know the virus which we are fighting against. Each episode is narrated by A list actors, Idris Elba (Heimdall in Thor, Brixton Lore in Hobbs and Shaw), Laura Linney (Sarah in Love Actually, Wendy Byrde in Ozark) and J.K.Simmons (Terence Fletcher in Whiplash, Billy Barber in Defending Jacob).
14. Unsolved Mysteries.
A docuseries which covers the real-life mysteries relating to missing persons, unexplained paranormal encounters, alien abduction, UFO and ghost encounters, and conspiracy theories showing them in the dramatized way and also presents some real hard evidence, images, and videos that can be uneasy for some viewers. It has a total of 15 seasons and 593 episodes and the new two seasons are available on Netflix.
13. Bad Boy Billionaires: India
A three-part docuseries that uncovers the truth and the reason behind why these tycoons, Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Subrata Roy, were brought down. We know the reasons but it shows their deeds in a more detailed manner.
12. Tell Me Who I Am.
This documentary film tells the story of two brothers Alex and Marcus Lewis, where Marcus helps his twin brother Alex in bringing back his memory, which he lost in an accident at the age of 18. They tell how they were sexually abused by his mother and her friends. It's hard-hitting and has uneasy dialogues but it's heart-touching at the same time.
11. Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator
This film focus on the founder of hot yoga, Bikram Chaudhary, a millionaire, who was accused of sexual harassment with his students. The victims have got the chance here to speak against the abusers and are a solid representation of the people in the higher positions who are abusing their powers.
10. Night On Earth.
This six-part docuseries is a nature documentary that shows the life of nocturnals and the animals who are active at night, their hidden world and how do they prey in the dark, captured stunningly in the low light. It's visually appealing and narrated beautifully by Samira Wiley.
09. Connected.
Connected: The Hidden Science of Everything is a six-part docu-series where journalist Latif Nasser explains how everything and everyone on this Earth is connected. He tried to take small things like surveillance, poop, dust, digits, clouds, and nukes to explain and that's fascinating but in the end, you'll find to see something more in-depth.
08. Fyre
A documentary film which shows why the Fyre Festival of 2017 didn't take place. The buzz for this festival was set so high, it was trending on Instagram but with treacherous marketing policy, and irresponsibility of some people, failed the festival to happen. Even if you don't know about Fyre Festival, it's interesting enough to watch. It also crystallizes the fact that how Social Networking sites are used against us as a distraction, our data are being extracted, and used as a weapon against us.
07. Miss Americana
This documentary film shows Taylor Swift's life, by a collection of raw footage, including interviews, home videos, concert videos and recordings, showing her life and career in an unfiltered manner, which also shows her battle with body dysmorphia, her sexual assault trial and more. Many like her songs, but you should watch this genuine and raw film to know who Taylor Swift really is!
06. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet.
Narrated by 93 years old, David Attenborough, it's a wake up for humans, from what he has witnessed, the degradation of Earth, in his lifetime. He is constantly making us cautious, as we'll be the sole reason of our own destruction and it's high time we should change ourselves and control our greed.
05. The Great Hack.
This film focus to unveil the work of Cambridge Analytica in the field of politics, from Brexit campaign to US election of 2016. It shows how they have exploited the data of millions of Facebook users, and questions, are we safe? You'll question yourself, why even you're using Internet, after watching this two hours effective documentary.
04. Wild Wild Country.
This six-part docu-series is about Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, an Indian guru, his personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela, and their followers in the Rajneeshpuram community located in Wasco County, Oregon. It shocks you briskly and very hard to get who's good and who's evil.
03. American Factory.
A Chinese billionaire opens a factory in an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand Americans. It's about a plant that makes windshields in Dayton, Ohio, run by a Chinese billionaire. He reopened an abandoned plant, in enthusiasm and being hopeful but soon turns out to be a conflict between high tech China and working class America.
02. The Social Dilemma.
This film explores the rise of the social media "virtual world" and its damage to the society and to the mind of the people, and uncovers the exploitation of user data, and in turn how they're used against us as a weapon, to nurture our addiction, effects on mental health, leading to the rise in the number of teen suicides. Tristan Harris (president and a co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology) and many more engineers recommend taking some countermeasures to protect oneself from this weapon.
01. Our Planet.
This 8 part docuseries, focus on the natural biodiversity all around the world, and how we, humans, are a threat to them and to the Earth. It's a very effective presentation by David Attenborough, who constantly reminds us that now is the time to stop exploiting Earth for our own good. It's visually stunning, and breathtaking, and the series as a whole is very impactful, backed by the beautiful background music.
