The Power - Review : Unlike its name it's Weak and Frustatingly Long!!!

The Power - Review

The Power is an Indian Hindi Action Crime Drama film directed by Mahesh V Manjrekar. It stars Vidyut Jammwal, Shruti Haasan, Mahesh V Manjrekar, Prateik Babbar, Jisshu Sengupta, Yuvika Chaudhary, Zakir Hussain, and Sachin Khedekar in lead roles. It was released on 14th January 2021 on ZeePlex.

Devidas Thakur (Vidyut Jammwal) returns from Singapore and is the youngest son of the crime lord Kalidas Thakur (Mahesh V Manjrekar). He is in love with Pari (Shruti Haasan) who is the daughter of his father's associate Anwar (Zakir Hussain). They are planning to get married in six months. Kalidas is against getting involved in the drug business and hence the other crime lords together try to kill him and now Kalidas is in a coma.

Hearing about a meeting of Anwar with one of the other crime lords, the Thakur family suspects him in assassinating Kalidas and he's killed. Then Pari pledges to avenge her father's death by wiping the Thakur family. In the meantime, Devidas is in power as his father is in a coma. Now, will the sons of the Thakur Family will able to take vengeance and to make sure that the family survives when other crime lords are standing together against them?

Written by Mahesh V Manjrekar, the story and screenplay are outdated. The film starts with a nice family reunion for an engagement ceremony but unexpectedly Kalidas is shot wounded and then starts a tsunami of generic typical events of revenge, jealousy, power, deception, survival, and bloodshed. The problem doesn't end here, it is so fast-paced that almost everything flies above your head and that's the biggest problem as it fails to create a connection with the audiences.

As expected, nothing is shown from the base level, but everyone has been given a sparking personality at least so that the viewers do not think of this as an unnecessary crowded film. But still, some feel unnecessary who doesn't add any value to the script. Nor the characters are that well written so that you can emotionally connect with them like that of Pari who lost her father and Devidas who's father is in a coma.

Devidas seems to be a most ridiculous character as in one scene he tells that he's Chef and then in other scenes, he starts to fight like an action hero. Yes, it could be like he belongs to a gangster family and that's why he has been trained from his childhood days. Then there's Jisshu Sengupta's character which is nothing but dumb and foolishly written. Why Pari becomes a crime lord, the reason is very shallow and hard to digest.

The film takes advantage of releasing on OTT and displays blood and grotesque, but what's the use when you're not showing the head chopped from the body or severing hands and legs but the director finds it okay to show the blood-covered parts lying on the floor. The tiring 2 hours 33 minutes long runtime is also the biggest drawback. It's trying to be Godfather considering the characters, the violence, and runtime. But sadly it fails to entertains or to rise from its mediocrity.

Vidyut Jammwal as Devidas Thakur is nothing different from what we have already seen him doing in his earlier film. He has that same wooden expression throughout the film. Shruti Haasan as Pari at least impresses in her emotional act but her half-baked character limits her performance to be good enough and I think that someone else has dubbed for her voice. Mahesh V Manjrekar is good as Kalidas and Jisshu Sengupta is nothing more than a caricature and Pratiek is doing what he's usually doing in any other movie. Others are also just decent.

The cinematography by Rakesh Rawat is quite average. The action scenes could have been better shot and the art direction by Art Monk LLP is good. The background score by Prasad S fits the tone of the drama and the songs are average and easily forgettable. The editing by Sarvesh Parab is sharp.

The Power, unlike its name, is weak and powerless. The screenplay is very fast just to give you the thrill and joy but the result is boring and dreadful and predictable. The trailer showed the war between Vidyut and Shruti but the film is something else and is very long and Rs. 199 is definitely something you should not spend on this messy overlong gangster drama that doesn't even know what it wants to be.

Rating:- 1.5/5
