Mum Bhai (Season 1) - Review : A Lazy Mixture of 90s Action films!!!

Mum Bhai (Season 1) : Series Review

Mum Bhai is an Indian Crime Action Thriller Web Series directed by Akshay Choubey. It stars Angad Bedi, Sikandar Kher, Sandeepa Dhar, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Madhurima Roy, Vishwas Kini, Sunny Hinduja, and Anurag Mishra in the lead roles. It was released on 12th November 2020 on ALT Balaji and Zee5.

The story starts in the 1980s when young Bhaskar (Dherya Darji) attacks his teacher when he laid his hand on Bhaskar's mother, Anamma (Komal Chhabria) and In response, has to leave his village. Bhaskar then enters the city of Dreams Bombay, where he meets Rama (Sikandar Kher), a gangsta, who treats him like his younger brother and provided him a job as a cleaner in a hotel. Bhaskar then develops an interest in becoming a police officer and admires Karekar (Sameer Dharmadhikari), a police officer who has a rule of Shoot-first-think-later. The story further shows how Bhaskar went to become India's numero Uno Encounter Specialist.

The story has been written by Apoorva Lakhia, Chintan Gandhi, and Raj Vasant, with a screenplay by Apoorva Lakhia, Chintan Gandhi, Raj Vasant, and Chintan Shah. The story and screenplay both are quite serviceable but don't offer anything new. It feels like they've blended many scenes, taking it from different gangster movies and the result is Mum Bhai. The characters are good, and powerful, just like anyone would expect from these genres series or movies, but nothing is quite exciting to see, except the bond between Bhaskar and Rama. Apart from their genuine brotherhood, everything feels contrived. The power of the underworld and their unruliness has been amazingly shown, I'll agree with that.

The series shows two sides of the story keeping our hero Bhaskar in the light, one is the rising of him to become the number one encounter specialist, and playing the main role in cleaning the streets of Bombay from the gangsters like Zaheer (Sunny Hinduja) and Poojari (Anurag Mishra), and the second is when Bhaskar is in prison because he killed the Home Minister. There's also a new angle, where Rama starts to work under Zaheer, but Bhaskar will or will not kill his brother, creates complications which are absorbing, other than that nothing is actually captivating enough to hold onto for 12 episodes.

Angad Bedi has done a fine job as Bhaskar, and Sikandar Kher, an underrated gem, is in terrific form as Rama, and their bond is only a good thing to like in this series. Sameer Dharmadhikari as Karekar is on fire but his performance, as well as his character, dips as the story progresses. Vishwas Kini as Shirodkar is also good as the smart journalist, and Sandeepa Dhar as Vaishnavi and Madhurima Roy as Ranjana have also lent good support.

The cinematography by Jay Bhansali is very bad, and it feels like you're watching a daily soap, or B-grade action movie, the production design is just okay, and the sound design is awful, the punching sounds are not synced properly with the moves and the action scenes are not at all exciting, it's boring and dull and even the dubbing becomes unclear sometimes. The script being weak is another thing, but these things should be of a high standard. Even the yellow tint doesn't help to achieve anything, it becomes unpleasant after some time to see everything in unnatural colors.

Mum Bhai doesn't have anything new to put forward, and the final product is a mixture of many Gangster movies. With lazy action scenes and contrived screenplay, it fails to create any mark. Apoorva Lakhia last directed Crackdown, a decent series, but here he falls flat to generate fresh script, or to present anything which could be exciting at least. It will be forgotten in no time, when there are so much of amazing contents out there in the crime genre like Paatal Lok, Aarya, Mirzapur, etc. Go and watch that instead. ALT Balaji has to buckle up in this strong competition, with different OTT platforms, delivering their best, rather than releasing contents like this and Gandii Baat and all.

Rating:- 1.5/5

Now streaming on ALT Balaji and Zee5.
