The New Mutants is an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name and is the thirteenth and final installment in the X-Men film series. The film is directed by Josh Boone and screenplay by Josh Boone and Knate Lee and stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga in the main roles. This film was released on 28th August 2020 in theaters and is now available on BluRay.
Danielle/Dani Moonstar (Blu Hunt) after surviving a tornado, which killed her father, now wakes in a hospital where she's taken care of by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) and she tells Dani that she's a mutant, and she's not alone, there are four others who also possess special powers. Rahne Sinclair (Masie Williams) is very good to her and they start getting close but Illyana (Anya Taylor Joy) doesn't like Dani. One day under treatment, she has a vision about other mutants being killed and now she's sure that something is wrong about this place. She tries to tell others about her vision, so now, will they will be able to fight against what's ahead of them?
The story and screenplay by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and Knate Lee are full of cliches. There's nothing in this film, we've never seen before, in fact, it's the most overused script of the all-time. But that doesn't mean you won't like it. The first half is sluggish, but it's the sour-sweet chemistry between the characters that keeps you invested. Even the power of Dani has been kept as a mystery which unfolds in the second half . That'll hook you up, and, Dani and Rahne heartwarming scenes and moments that are so lovely that we can't get enough of it. The second half starts with a BANG when everyone has to live again their darkest fear, slender man-like figures appear from every corner, and a huge bear which could tear the hospital down is the villain from inside of Dani's mind. If you have watched the X Men franchise, then I think you'll be able to recognize all the easter eggs in the movie.
This film is packed with a solid well-known cast. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark from Game Of Thrones) as Rahne is very good, but in some scenes, she gets overpowered by the stellar Blu Hunt (The Hollow from The Originals). She is natural and simple and that's what makes her performance so effective. Anya Taylor Joy (The Witch, Split) as the sassy bold girl, Illyana, is terrific and she has that impact because you'll hate her from the start for being so self-obsessed. Charlie Heaton (Jonathan from Stranger Things) has done a good job, he's talented but sadly he doesn't get to shine. Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto is also wasted just like Charlie Heaton. Alice Braga as Dr. Reyes is just present and fails to leave any mark.
The cinematography by Peter Deming is spectacular. The film looks beautiful, most of the scenes are indoors but yet smooth and amazingly shot. Especially the grand climax, the cinematography with outstanding special effects, lifts the movie, and saves from just being average.
The New Mutants by Josh Boone definitely suffers from being slow in the first half and full of cliches, yet it's watchable due to its solid actors and their lovely presence, who make their messed up characters on screen, believable and appealing. It will surely gain its followers in later times, but still, I enjoyed The New Mutants, its solid cast, and heavily CGI loaded climax, despite being a stale story. The film has been panned by the critics but this review is solely my view on the film.
