Paurashpur is an Indian Hindi Period Drama Erotica Thriller web series directed by Shachindra Vats. It stars Annu Kapoor, Shilpa Shinde, Milind Soman, Shaheer Shaikh, Poloumi Das, Anantvijay Joshi, Kashish Rai, Aditya Lal, Sahil Salathia, Flora Saini, and Ashmita Bakshi in lead roles. It has a total of 7 episodes and was released on 29th December 2020 on ALT Balaji and Zee5.
Set in the 16th century, Paurashpur is the story of a king Maharaj Bhadrapratap (Annu Kapoor) who is weak and very weak and his hunger for s*x is uncontrollable. Rani Meeravati (Shilpa Shinde) brings new queens to take care of the king and his hunger. The king tortures women, sexually assaulting them and one night one of his four queens disappears from the palace.
Paurashpur is a princely state where women are subjected to many atrocities. Women are considered here a mannequin in the hands of men. They cannot say no to any man and do not have the power to raise their voice against the men. After which there comes a transperson Boris (Milind Soman) who tries to stands against this torture and unruliness against women. Whatever happens next for that you've to see this series!
The story and screenplay are by Baljit Singh Chaddha, Rajesh Tripathi, and Chital Rajesh Tripathi. In one word, it is SH*T. Is this called a story? The characters have absolutely no depth and meaning whatsoever. Even the episodes are very short around 20-22 minutes, you will be irritated by whatever the hell is going on in Paurashpur.
The women have to wear a chastity belt when men are not at home, really? Is going out of my mind. The story (HUH, a story) is set in the 16th century and women have to face some really tough hardships and tortures but the maker did highlight these issues and just left it unexplored. The series takes a U-Turn and now the Kamasutra mode is ON. The series is filled with adult scenes that are not at all sexually charged and will make you laugh hard.
Milind Soman, a good actor, is playing a transgender here, for what?? What was the purpose of it? What is the purpose of the show? It's so bland and unfocused in its own sex world, that the writer just forgets his intention behind writing this show. Everything is so forced and contrived and feels fake, there is zero chemistry between the actors and the twists and turns are so lame, that it hardly matters where this series is going with every episode.
Dialogues by Ranveer Pratap Singh are immature and sometimes funny, and there are no hard-hitting and emotional dialogues despite there was ample space for such lines. Costume design by Late Leena Daru is also not digestible. Why the queens are sitting always half-naked? Do they not have enough clothes to wear? The series was shot just in 22 days and that too in the lockdown period, kudos for that, but why this?
The climax seems to be highly inspired by the Jauhar scene of Padmaavat, every woman dressed in red and chanting loud Jai Bhawaani. The exact same you will witness here and I have a strong feeling that the same audio has been used too from Padmaavat. Everything is just so bad here, nothing pops up to be good enough to grab your eye.
Annu Kapoor is just hamming throughout as Bhadrapratap. Whereas Shilpa Shinde as Meerawati is a huge letdown. Shaheer Shaikh as Veer Singh is mostly absent. Everyone is just doing anything, no impact at all. Only Ashmita Bakshi as Umanglata was quite earnest in her part.
The cinematography by Manoj Kumar Khatoi and Neelabh Kaul is just terrible. The beautiful sets are not captured well nor any adult scenes are clear enough to leave any mark. The background score by Monty Sharma is also not up to the mark but not that bad. The editing by Sachindra Vats is awful.
Paurashpur is the worst series of all time considering how all the hard work falls miserably to create any impact on its viewers. It's a royal version of Gandii Baat. Terrible story, terrible dialogues and characters, poor performances helps this series to sink more into the unknown. The sensitive issues are not handled well and are shown in a very childish manner, the unoriginal finale, and the irritating adult scenes are of absolute zero worth. Half stars just for the terrific production design and art design.
