Skylines is an Action Science Fiction film written and directed by Liam O'Donnell. It stars Lindsey Morgan, Jonathan Howard, Daniel Bernhardt, Alexander Siddig, Rhona Mitra, Cha Lee Yoon, Jeremy Fitzgerald in the main roles. It was released on 18th December 2020 on Video On Demand.
It's been almost five years ago when Rose Corley (Lindsey Morgan) saved humanity with the war against the aliens, the harvesters. The film starts 15 years after the invasion when a mysterious virus is corrupting the body of the pilots, a friendly alien hybrid which are now becoming a threat and had to exterminate from the world.
General Radford (Alexander Siddig) sends her with Leon (Jonathan Howard) a hunter, Zhi (Cha Lee Yoon) a kind of hacker, Colonel Owens (Daniel Bernhardt) former navy seals, and Alexi (Ieva Andrejevaite) specializing in target search and destroy, to an unexplored planet Cobalt One to find a core drive from the Harvesters ship, which is powerful enough to restore every pilot on Earth for 100 years.
The story and screenplay penned by Liam O'Donnell sadly offer nothing new. The story which originated from the streets of L.A. has now become a star Wars and Alien mashup and follows a typical story of going into an unknown planet and get attacked by creatures they don't know about.
Rose is an interesting character, a human-alien baby who grows fast and the film revolves around her. But with poor development, none of the characters comes out to be effective enough to get invested in this overstretched two hours movie. Despite being cliched and unoriginal, the film however evolves but yes, it many times takes the overused B-movie paths.
On the planet Cobalt one, the team is attacked by creatures who can't see in the light, which seems to be highly inspired by the creatures of The Descent who also lost their ability to see. Nevertheless, the action sequences are at least good whereas everything seems to just bland, the characters, their dynamics, none works.
Lindsey Morgan was nice here and is very good in action scenes. Whereas Jonathan Howard, Daniel Bernhardt, Alexander Siddig, Rhona Mitra, Cha Lee Yoon, Jeremy Fitzgerald did their job quite well. The cinematography by Alain Duplantier is terrific, the black and blue tint looks amazing and the visual effects are also worth mentioning which are fantastic.
Skylines, the final part of the Skyline Trilogy, is just an okayish attempt to end the franchise. The first part did a decent business and the second part was just average and so is the finale. With strong resemblance from the films like Alien, District 9, it lacks originality, and hence it's just a one time watch for its pretty amazing VFX and how stunning the film looks. But that solely doesn't make a film successful.
Rating:- 2/5
