Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is an American horror television series developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. It stars Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Richard Coyle, Miranda Otto, Lachlan Watson, and Gavin Leatherwood. The fourth and final season of this series was released on 31st December 2020 on Netflix.
This new season starts with Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) chanting something in eldritch and calling the first eldritch terror on the Earth. Then enters, many masked men who are bursting out every light in the streets. Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) is now also living her adventurous life with her friends and she's not with either Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) or Harvey (Ross Lynch). Whereas the coven has started to pray to Dark Mother Hecate, and Zelda Spellman (Miranda Otto) announces herself as this years' designated crone, Hilda (Lucy Davis) as their Mother who can create life, and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) as their maiden. Sabrina wants to meet other Sabrina, who now is the queen of Hell. Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) is now living a very troubled life, as she's constantly hearing Sabrina's voices in her head, Sister Julia, wife of Good Reverend Lovecraft, knocks on her door and invites her to come to their new church.
Those masked men are again seen terrorizing the coven, and Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) along with Salem, finds out where they came from and what they want. Again in the next episode, a smelly disgusting man, who is called The Uninvited, is killing people who deny inviting them and giving their hospitality and rips their hearts out. Then in the next episodes, another danger to Greendale, The Weirds arrives on the door of Father Blackwood searching for a fresh body for a host and the target is Sabrina. Here Harvey seems to have a gift where he draws some sketches while asleep which depicts the Eldritch Terrors, terrorizing Greendale which have been unleashed by Father Blackwood whereas Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair) gets to know her deepest secret about her cunning that her nana has been hiding from her. Will this coven be able to save Greendale and this world from these Eldritch Terrors?
Season 4 is written in a pattern of one Eldritch Terror per episode form and you will feel that this season is very much packed and a lot of things are unveiled here and 8 episodes that are of 1 hour and some little more than an hour, didn't do justice to it. In last season, two Sabrinas were brought to the story and you can say both Sabrinas are very well used here and you will not feel that time loop theory is forcibly added. There are many characters, from season one none of the characters has been eliminated but many have new ones have been added, and yes, as expected, many are left behind with almost no solidity or value to add to the story.
Harvey and Theo are kept aside and offer almost nothing rather than giving some lovely moments. Even Nick and Prudence are not at all strong here. I really missed these characters here which was slightly disappointing for me as this new season was all about Sabrina. Ms. Wardwell has also not given that importance here. Despite that the show is interesting and of course fascinating, it will not make you miss those characters that much but I can't deny that you will feel that the spark among all these characters is missing here.
Nonetheless, this show has proved to be a gift for horror fans, the way it has created its world of dark magic and witchcraft, each scene is an example of wonderful art that been executed amazingly. There are many scenes, like here when Sabrina gets caught up in a sitcom is so much intriguing to know what's going to happen next and in the imp of the perverse episode, it's very hard not to like it as it delivers every scene in such a deliciously entertaining manner.
Kiernan Shipka is as always is extraordinary as Sabrina. She has proved to be a perfect fit for this role and the way she has delivered every scene is very impressive. She appears confident and strong in every frame and after this no doubt she will be getting numerous projects. Ross Lynch is a very good actor and he did a great job here as Harvey Kinkle.
Lucy Davis as Hilda Spellman was a delight as her unusual humor is always a joy to watch. Miranda Otto as Zelda did an outstanding job and Chance Perdomo was also good as Ambrose. Michelle Gomez was a thrill to watch, not in season 4, but she was amazing in this show as a whole. Jaz Sinclair as Roz, Tati Gabrielle as Prudence, Lachlan Watson as Theo have lent good support. Gavin Leatherwood as Nick had his presence felt, Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood was also impactful. Skye P. Marshall gave a terrific performance as Mambo Marie. She truly stands on her own with her strong character.
The cinematography was always been flawless here since the first season. The wide shots of bizarre lands and the rituals and the witchcrafts have been very well picturized here. The music by Adam Taylor suits the show, it is loud just like the show. The dialogues are catchy and the spells are amusing to hear. The production design by Lisa Soper is one of the biggest highlights of this show. Loaded with heavy VFX, it never fails to impress how different and unique the show looks from others. The blurry effect may have been avoided which feels too much after a point of time.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4 is a very good final goodbye season. It's entertaining and intriguing and what do you want more? This has never been a perfect show, say with its writing or direction. Everything that has been offered for 4 seasons is not at all fresh, but it has that attraction many shows lacks and that's where Sabrina scores. The characters were something that you liked spending time with them as they feel relatable and connecting at some level. This show is a truly adventurous, courageous, and bold show which I think shouldn't have ended now. Despite its silliness and madness, it was a thrilling experience overall. I will miss Sabrina Spellman.
