Gullak is an Indian comedy-drama series created by Shreyansh Pandey. It stars Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Harsh Mayar, Sunita Rajwar, and Shivankit Singh Parihar. The first season was released on 27th June 2019 on Sony LIV.
Gullak is set in a small town of North India and revolves around the Mishra family, a middle-class people living a normal life and facing and struggling with day to day problems. The father (Jameel Khan) works in an electrical department, the mother (Geetanjali Kulkarni) is a housewife, Annu the elder son (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) is preparing for SSC and the younger son Aman (Harsh Mayar) is struggling to complete his chart for his next practical exam.
Written by Nikhil Vijay, Shreyansh Pandey, and Durgesh Singh, this Gullak, a piggy bank of memories is a tale of a middle-class family to which I think almost everyone will relate. It has a kind of charm that differs it from today's other shows. The direction by Amrit Raj Gupta is fabulous and Viveka Rachel Banja who designed the set has to be praised. Every detail has been taken care of. It seems that a real family has been moved from this house and the show has been shot there. Whether it is a plastic jar, a mirror above the basin, or the drying of the clothes, the utmost care has been taken.
The Mishra family seems to be from Uttar Pradesh. There is also a neighbor, Bittu ki Mummy (Sunita Rajwar), a outspoken woman. Five stories of this family are shown in the five episodes. In the first episode Tehri, the mother-son's point of view of eating Tehri is seen. Tehri is the favorite dish of the mothers and just by adding rice, potatoes, turmeric, salt, cumin, and ghee and that's it, it's ready. The story and the characters gets established from here only. The character of the mother belongs to the middle-class mothers and is very precisely written, always worried, taking all the duties of the house and scolding and lecturing everyone, in anger, but immediately cools down.
In this show, the best scenes are that of mother and Bittu ki mummy and their mocking and taunting conversations. We have also seen women attacking sarcastically to their neighbor's fellow women. But those women do not mind, they speak sarcasm in some other way. The friendship of both also remains intact. They stay with each other on every occasion and continuously speak to each other. I have not understood this secret to date.
I liked the scene of the second episode 'Hum Do Hamare Do'. The parents of the Mishra family has gone out. Both brothers are at home. The younger brother is drinking tea and does not bring it for the elder. The elder one says to reduce the sound of the TV and the younger one doesn't. Then they both get themselves caught up in a fight. It brings alive the moments when we brothers used to have fought for some silly reasons. Like this, the show is filled with many unforgettable and relatable scenes like changing the sheets and curtains when any guests are arriving, telling to go to a medical store to bring paracetamol if you're having a fever, bitching about neighbors and water pump problems, and many more. Thank God the series is so simple and so is effective. That's why it wins you with its screenplay and the characterization and their dynamics.
Jameel Khan and Geetanjali Kulkarni as father and mother shine throughout the series. Their interactions are a highlight of the show. Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar as brothers also did a good job and perfectly captures the soul of siblings who fights with each other but can't live without each other. Sunita Rajwar has lent amazing support and is hilarious in many scenes. Shivankit Singh Parihar as Gullak's voice is average.
As told the production design is terrific and very detailed and the cinematographer Shree Namjoshi and Anand Bansal did a fantastic job in capturing all of that and the wide shots with all the four souls in it showing their body language are just perfect. Editing by Amit Kulkarni is sharp and the music is enjoyable but forgettable.
Gullak Season 1 is a mirror of our families and societies and the characters are highly relatable on many levels and whatever the obstacles are coming on their way will remind you of you and your family. That's why the show is never boring and the crisp 5 episodes are of perfect length which makes it easy to watch it in one go. Season 2 is releasing on 15th January and I can't wait to see what it will offer!
Rating:- 4/5
