Lupin is a French Mystery Thriller web television series created by George Kay and François Uzan. It stars Omar Sy, Ludivine Sagnier, Clotilde Hesme, and Vincent Londez in the main roles. It has a total of 5 episodes and was released on 8th January 2021 on Netflix.
Assane Diop (Omar Sy) works as a janitor at the Louvre and plans to steal a necklace that was once a gift from King Louis XVI to Marie Antoinette. He then goes to the gangsters from whom he borrowed money and convinces them to steal this necklace together. He arrives at Louvre as a millionaire and goes up for auction. Now cut to the flashbacks, where we see Assane's father Babakar (Fargass Assandé) works as a driver for the Pellegrini family.
Madame Anne Pellegrini (Nicole Garcia) treats him kindly and says he could take one book from their library if he wants for his son. He chooses Arsène Lupin: Gentlemen Burglar. On the other hand, Monsieur Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) doesn't like him and when that same necklace goes missing from their residence, he accuses Babakar of it. He is in jail and after someday he commits suicide. Is Assane trying to avenge his father's death? How will he do that?
Inspired by a fictional character Arsène Lupin created by Maurice Leblanc and the show written by George Kay and François Uzan is thoroughly enjoyable. The show has a resemblance to super hit show Money Heist but here our hero thief is not stealing for his own good. This time he has a real motive and it's personal. He is out there to avenge his father's death and he impersonate himself as Arsène Lupin, a famous character from the book his father gave him.
He lives like him, cheating and fooling everyone even his family. His character is very layered and well written and his anger and emotion are what form the base of this story. The show delivers frequent twists and turns and never bores you and the unusual humor of the show really works in the favor. All the characters have a definite personality and it's because of the tight and clever screenplay that none of the characters feels forced even small roles like that of Fabienne Beriot (Anne Benoît).
The five episodes are crisp and of perfect length but I've to say it does take things for granted and delivers many silly scenes which feels just too much to handle. The police are as usual, depicted as no more than fools and dummies who are always standing at a dead end. Youssef (Sofiane Guerrab) manages to link Assane with Lupin....but how?? It does feel kind of weird as the scene comes sudden, maybe the makers will explain it in the second season.
Omar Sy as Assane Diop has given a fine performance. He is fun to watch, doesn't matter if his acts might appears silly. Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guedira is very good as the nerdy and odd officer and Hervé Pierre as Hubert Pellegrini is excellent in the villainous avatar. Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, Clotilde Hesme as Juliette Pellegrini, Nicole Garcia as Anne Pellegrini, Antoine Gouy as Benjamin Ferel, and Etan Simon as Raoul have also lent good support.
The cinematography by Christophe Nuyens and Martial Schmeltz is brilliant. The show looks extraordinarily magnificent in every frame. The production design by Françoise Dupertuis is fantastic. The music by Mathieu Lamboley is mesmerizing and soothing but the editing could have been crisper, it is good but it could have been more fast-paced.
Lupin is a fine binge-worthy show if you're looking for a popcorn entertainer. It has its charm, and the twists will make you stick to it. It has flaws and is unintentionally ridiculous and stupid at some point nevertheless it is watchable and enjoyable even at its silliness. Watch it if you haven't, this French show is now ruling Netflix and that's not surprising!!
