Indoo Ki Jawani - Review : Despite having an interesting premise, it fails to Impress!

Indoo Ki Jawani is an Indian Hindi comedy film directed by Abir Sengupta. It stars Kiara Advani and Aditya Seal in main roles. It was theatrically released on 11th December 2020.

As the name suggests, Indoo or Indira (Kiara Advani) is at the heart of the film's story. His snooty boyfriend leaves her and cheats her. Now Indoo is irritated and decides that she will now find her love through a dating app 'Dinder' and will do the one-night stand. But the evening that was supposed to be romantic, brings a stir in his life.

From the youth of Ghaziabad to the retired uncles, one thing is trending on social media and that is Indira Gupta. She is in a relationship with a loser who just needs "..." from her. But Indu is not like this. She will not let him do anything until the boy is serious about marriage. The boy betrays her and is caught cheating on her. Sonal (Mallika Dua), Indoo's friend, has her own character, "No one knows more than Sonal about what boys want".

Sonal explains to her friend Indoo that every boy is behind only one thing and that is " you know what it implies". Now there is an entry of the 'Dinder' app, brother of Tinder. Sonal convinces Indoo to find love for herself on this app. Indoo follows all her advice and gets her date from the app, Samar (Aditya Seal). Samar arrives at Indoo's house when she is alone. Meanwhile, news spreads that some Pakistani terrorists have entered the city. Indoo then realizes that she has called trouble at her house.

Abir Sengupta has written the film. You will find the film funny in its opening 10 minutes and it looks like there are going to be some interesting scenes in the latter part. Some scenes are such that we think this is a comedy suspense film. But before you weave any other fabric as an audience, the plot of the film starts to disintegrate.

Mallika Dua has once again done what she has been doing on screen. She is the Heroine's best friend. She fits into the character of a small-town girl and brings a laugh to some extent. But as soon as the new drama starts at Indoo's house, it strictly focuses on the happenings inside that house only. The film's lead pair, ie Kiara Advani and Aditya Seal, have no chemistry. This thing haunts you throughout the film.

However, both Aditya and Kiara comfort the eyes. This means they provide some cute moments from the film. On the pretext of Indoo, Abir is explaining the problem of India-Pakistan. Once upon a time, the slogan 'Indira is India' was used. In this era, Abir is broadcasting the message according to his new interpretation of 'Indira is India'.

The film talks about a girl who is restless about her youth. She thinks boys are bad. Indoo feels that not only the boys, but the entire neighborhood and even the old men want to hoist their glory on her youth. Indoo is cultish. Her break-up happens again and again because the new-age boys want to be physical before marriage. One Night Stand is the first step of the relationship.

The film that Abir has written, is not well handled. All the visuals and dialogues point towards the frustrations of youth. What Indoo studies is not show in the film, but her dream is to become an air hostess. Not in a single scene, it shows any signs or passion of becoming an air hostess in her.

Kiara Advani is getting better and better with movies and she's a treat to see here. She dancing, hopping, bubbling unlike any of her earlier characters. She is good here but could have been better. Aditya Seal is good and nothing extraordinary, his's acting here is like any other shows or films of his. Who really impresses me was Mallika Dua as Sonal. Whenever anything comes out of her mouth you will laugh, like 'jhande garna' and all.

There's no scope for a good level of cinematography and the music is also not that good. The production design by Priya Suhas looks real and the editing by Ajay Sharma is also sharp.

Indoo Ki Jawani is a weak film. Abir Sengupta's vision of tackling the India Pakistan issue comically, falls flat and makes you cringe when the two leads are fighting over this topic. It's so blandly executed, it's just embarrassing and awkward to sit through. The premise of the film sounds interesting for sure, but this has to be more comic punched and the sensitive issues could have been handled more thoughtfully. Overall if you are looking for just entertainment in the name of cinema, this is for you, otherwise, skip it.
