Pixie - Review : Riveting Olivia Cooke in a Entertaining-Cool Heist Film!!

Pixie is a comedy thriller film directed by Barnaby Thompson. It stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Hardy, Daryl McCormack, Colm Meaney, and Alec Baldwin in main roles.  It was released on 23rd December 2020 on Video On Demand.

Pixie O'Brien (Olivia Cooke) had lost her mother and she is going to avenge her death from this town for what they did to her mother. Fergus (Fra Fee) and Colin (Rory Fleck Byrne) enters a church and shoots all the priests and runs away with a bag full of drugs. Frank (Ben Hardy) and Harland (Daryl McCormack) follows Pixie from a pub to her house Frank wants to have a one night stand with her. Colin learns that Fergus is now dating Pixie and that's why he shoots him and runs away from there leaving the car and the dead body stranded in the middle of the road.

He reaches up to Pixie's house where Harlan was waiting outside and seeing Colin with a gun, he impulsively runs over him with his car and kills him. Frank comes outside and gets to know about his friend's doing and takes the bag full of drugs and they leave. They make a plan to sell it and get out of living this miserable life. But Pixie tells her that some gangster priests are after that bag and will kill them to recover it. So it's Pixie who can save them from all these gangsters.

Written by Preston Thompson, Pixie is very much packed with many tracks going on simultaneously. But that's the good thing, you don't get a single second to think about anything else. It's written in such a way, it's dark and humorous at the same time. Pixie, the title role, is nothing different, she's the same tough and smart and sassy and on full revenge mode but it's not all over her face.

That's the most likable thing about Pixie. Its tries to be light but dark underneath. Her relationship with her stepfather and stepbrother is so amazingly fleshed out, and the same goes with the two boys, Frank and Harland. She is helping them to get rid of these gangsters and their wars but she also makes them grow - boy to man. A road trip with these three characters and their interactions are the best thing to see.

The depiction of the villains appears foolish though, whether it's Father Hector (Alec Baldwin) or Mickey (Turlough Convery). They just didn't get many scenes to make their presence felt otherwise these characters had the potential to be cool villains. It's full of entertaining sequences that will not make you bore for sure and the priests and nuns with shotguns at the climax delivers some clap worthy scenes. This film is slick and clever in its way.

Olivia Cooke is like a fresh breeze. As Pixie, she guarantees that her way of avenging her mother's death doesn't become dull. Whether as Lou in Sound of Metal or as a clever, selfish Pixie, she's a treat to watch. Ben Hardy as Frank and Daryl McCormack as Harland also entertains. Colm Meaney as Dermot O'Brien and Alec Baldwin as Father Hector McGrath also delivered their best. Turlough Convery as Mickey shines and Olivia Byrne as Summer always makes you smile whenever she's on-screen.

The cinematography by John de Borman is quite good. As the film is shot in Ireland, the film looks beautiful in every frame. The production design by Nicola Moroney is impressive and the music by Gerry Diver and David Holmes also goes well with the mood of the film. The editing by Robbie Morrison is very sharp and doesn't have any boring moments.

Pixie delivers what it is. Barnaby Thompson's slick direction and Robbie Morrison's crisp editing works wonders and make this an engaging and absorbing heist thriller and the touch of humor makes this a complete entertainer. The characters could have been presented with more depth but it's fine given the nature of the plot. The storyline is slick and the screenplay moves smoothly and doesn't bore you. Watch it for Olivia Cooke's riveting performance and its cool and gripping storyline.

Rating:- 3/5
