Joji Review : Fahadh Faasil is phenomenal in this Unnerving Slow-Burn Thriller about Greed.

Joji is an Indian Malayalam Crime Thriller film directed by Dileesh Pothan. It stars Fahadh Faasil, Baburaj, Shammi Thilakan, Unnimaya Prasad, and Basil Joseph and was released on 7th April 2021 on Amazon Prime Video.

The story is about the Panachel family and the head is PK Kuttapan Panachel (Sunny PN) who has three sons, Jomon (Baburaj), Jaison (Joji Mundakayam), and Joji (Fahadh Faasil). One day Kuttapan Panchel had a stroke and even doctors have lost hope and the children start to talk about the inheritance. Eldest son insists on surgery and the surgery was a success. Kuttapan returns home in a wheelchair but is not interested in giving up his inheritance. Kuttapan chokes Joji when he asks for the same. Joji changes his father's medication and Kuttapan dies. Bincy, the sister-in-law, knows about this and Joji's plan. So how far Joji will go to take what he thinks he deserves?

Written by Shyam Pushkaran, Joji is inspired by Macbeth by William Shakespeare, which has been adapted into story for the film so many times around the world. Joji has only taken the core of the masterpiece and has interesting characters and an unusual wit to bind you to the film. It starts like a general family drama where it is clearly evident that the sons don't have the guts to face the patriarch of the family who choked his own son Joji accusing him of stealing Rs. 8000 from his wallet.

The feeling of watching this film is somewhat the same as Drishyam 2. Initially, the film looks like a breezy and easy film with characters, and their interactions are so natural. Even the house and their dresses, nothing is an inch above real and that's what really impressed me. It doesn't waste any time to dive into the darker zone where it delivers intriguing yet witty sequences that are absolutely mind-blowing. It has no mystery element, everything has been done just like Andhadhun, you just need to see how Joji rises and falls above all this.

I'm blown away by Fahadh Faasil's performance. He brings simplicity in playing Joji and he is excellent in every scene in this film. His mysterious plans or be it jumping in anger but in silence, tells a lot about how Joji is and makes us wonder - is he really gonna get that far? Unnimaya Prasad as Bincy is the silent star of the film who plays a part in every evil plan of Joji's. Baburaj as Jomon Panachel and Joji Mundakayam as Jaison are equally entertaining. Sunny PN as Kuttappan P K Panachel rules with this heroic presence.

I'm in love with the camera work and the music of the film. The cinematography by Shyju Khalid is breathtaking. The aerial shots and the outdoor images are mesmerizing and beautifully shot. The music by Justin Varghese is unnerving and haunting and the editing by Kiran Das is spot on. Though the film has a slow pace that's why it impacts.

Joji is a perfect thriller. What do you expect from a good thriller? Interesting characters, thrills, and suspense, and Joji excels in every department. Every character is amazingly carved out showing their greed and appetite for what they'll inherit. Fahadh Faasil is yet again fabulous in this film which is about the central character's greed, hunger, desperation, and path to self-destruction. Stream it, Joji is fun and slow-burn thriller which has its target limited audience who will enjoy it despite its simplicity and nuttiness but others might find it boring and nothing of entertainment value. Watch it for its insane climax.
