All My Friends Are Dead is a Polish Comedy Horror film directed by Jan Belcl. It stars Julia Wieniawa, Adam Turczyk, Monika Krzywkowska, Michal Sikorski, Adam Bobik, Adam Woronowicz, and Michal Meyer in main roles and was released on 3rd February 2021 on Netflix.
A freshman detective Grzegorz (Michal Meyer) and Inspector Kwasniewski (Adam Woronowicz) enters a house, a crime scene, where a lot of teens are lying dead and a woman on a stretcher mumbling 'all my friends are dead' is taken outside. Now cut to one day earlier, 1st January, New Year party is going on in Marek's (Kamil Piotrowski) house. All of his friends are invited and are entering one by one. Soon the tension starts to rise, as one girl finds a gun but mistakenly shoots Marek. Things start to take a dark turn, where the relationships and intentions and secrets are revealed slowly and end in the way no one expected.
Jan Belcl has written quite an average script with teenagers who have their issues. But everything that is happening is so dumb to see. A boy wants to marry a girl but she thinks that he doesn't make her happy, then there's a homosexual boy not outed yet, a teenager who loves a woman who is more than ten years older than him, a frustrated pizza guy, horny guys and girls. Adding so many actors makes a path to show lots a body gore and all, but the writers fails in any of the department.
Neither any of the characters were strong enough to leave any impression nor the blood and grotesque impress much. What you get here is a chit-chatty 70 minutes of teen drama just like American Pie films with all hard up teens ready to attack anyone. And the rest of the film is full of brainless events that leave them in the condition in which they were found at the starting. The dreamy wedding scene at the end doesn't add anything to the film.
There are so many actors and they all have done reasonably well in their parts. Monika Krzywkowska as Gloria, Yassine Fadel as Jacques, and Adam Bobik as pizza boy were some performances that stand out from the crowd.
The cinematography by Cezary Stolecki is amazing. The camera captures every action and movement, big or small, effortlessly. The production design by Mela Melak is good enough and the music is just okay. The editing is crisp.
All My Friends Are Dead is a kind of teen drama horror that doesn't stand as a teen drama or horror fully. A plain and simple storyline, with almost nothing solid to offer, doesn't help this film to leave an impact on the viewer's mind. It's an easily forgettable film that appears to be trying hard to be good in many departments and fails.
