Fear of Rain is an American Psychological drama thriller film directed by Castille Landon. It stars Katherine Heigl, Madison Iseman, Israel Broussard, Eugenie Bondurant, and Harry Connick Jr. in main roles and is now available on VOD and Blu-ray no from 16th February 2021.
Rain Burroughs (Madison Iseman) is running down a forest and is being chased by a black hoodie killer. She wakes in a hospital next to her mother Michelle (Katherine Heigl) and her father John (Harry Connick Jr). She is allowed to go back home and the next day she starts going to school. She is treated like an outcast for her unpredictable violent behavior, even her friends have alienated her. She finds her joy talking to Caleb (Isreal Broussard), also a new boy and alone in the school. He shows her tricks and magic and they start to like and spending time each other. One night while sleeping Rain hears the noise of a child and sees a little girl in the attic of her neighbor's house Mrs. McConnell (Eugenie Boundarant), who is also a teacher of Rain. Now Rain tries to find out about this missing girl and who is Mrs. McConnell hiding in her house? But the crucial questions are - Is that little girl that Rain keeps seeing is real? Is Caleb real? Or is it just the effects of what she's suffering?
Written by Castille Landon, Fear of Rain is mainly about the 'fears' of Rain, a girl struggling with schizophrenia, who questions herself if the thing that she is seeing is real or not? Voices keep ringing in her ears that are truly not easy to hear even for us, it's too hard, and that gives us the idea about the horrors she is facing at every moment.
To give this film a definite track, Rain starts to investigate her neighbor who she suspects, is holding a girl in her attic. But the sad thing is this track doesn't work fully as it doesn't have any thrill. Is Mrs. McConnell a kidnapper? You will care less about that, what you are invested in here is the lead character Rain and the hallucinations and nightmare she is seeing keeping her eyes open. The twist in the last is surely a good one but apart from that nothing really works here, not even the sweet chemistry of Rain and Caleb.
Madison Iseman truly deserves praise for her outstanding portrayal of a schizophrenic patient Rain. She gives her more than a hundred percent to this role and not in a single scene she fails to create impact. Katherine Heigl as Michelle has a wonderful presence here. Israel Broussard as Caleb and Harry Connick Jr. as John are in good form. Eugenie Bondurant has an eerie vibe as Mrs. McConnell.
The cinematography by Joshua Reis is breathtaking. The rapid movements and shakiness in the camera work bring intensity to the film and the film is visually appealing. The production design by Shawn Carroll is beautiful. The music by Jamie Muhoberac brings life to this film and suits the drama. The editing by Morgan Halsey is good.
Overall, Fear of Rain by Castille Landon successfully showcases the nightmares and terrors the schizophrenic patients are going through, the battle in the minds with what's real and unreal. That's is really the scariest thing but it fails to evoke any excitement or thrills in its secondary track of finding the little girl. Madison Iseman nailed her performance and as a whole, it entertains and keeps you engrossed but some things don't work.
