Bad Trip is an American comedy film directed by Kitao Sakurai. It stars Eric Andre, Lil Rel Howery, and Tiffany Haddish and was released on 26th March 2021 on Netflix.
The story is pretty simple, Chris (Eric André) is working in a car wash where he sees his high school crush but unfortunately, he missed the chance to meet her. His best friend, Bud (Lil Rel Howery) works in a shop and his sister Trina (Tiffany Haddish) enters and robs the store despite she's on house arrest. One year later, Chris finally meets his high school crush Maria Li (Michaela Conlin) and she gives him her card and tells him that she runs a gallery in New York City. Now Chris and his best friend Bud make a plan to go to New York to give Maria a surprise and then they take Trina's car. Now Trina after coming out/run out from jail, and seeing that his brother Bud stole her car, decides to kill them both.
The story is by Eric André, Kitao Sakurai, and Andrew Barchilon, and screenplay by Dan Curry, Eric André, and Kitao Sakurai. Bad Trip is mad and so funny. It is a hidden camera comedy film where the three actors are seen playing pranks on others, in fact, the commoners are also a part of the film. Seeing their priceless reactions to whatever Chris André and Lil Rel Howery are doing is more hilarious than the prank itself. When Tiffany robs the store and gives some cash to two women, or distributing pamphlets that read that she'll kill Chris and Bud if she sees them, is outstanding.
In the next scene, Chris and Bud enter the same restaurant and people start to warn them that a lady is trying to find and kill them. It's so exceptionally thought that people might react to it in this way and it comes out so good. I was continuously thinking about Borat and Sacha Baron Cohen and thinking will they be able to match that level of insanity? But Bad Trip is truly one of a kind. It's so hilarious, seeing it has absolutely zero feathers on its storytelling and is so dumb in few scenes, it rises above all that showing the characteristic way of thinking of the people in such weird or tense situations. What would I have done when Tiffany would hand me a handful of cash or would I've gone to Chris to ask him 'Is he Okay?' when he fell off the bar or vomited like crazy. It works as a study, the makers didn't mean to make it something like that deep but it is.
The performances are over the top and absolutely wild. Chris André has unmatchable energy as Chris and to neutralize this madness there's Lil Rel Howery who impresses with his subtle act as Bud Malone. Tiffany Haddish is full-on electric. Michaela Conlin has looked beautiful and also impressed especially in the scene where she bursts out on Chris.
The camera work by Andrew Laboy is undeniably one of the biggest challenges to capture every movement and expression of the peoples. Laboy did it amazingly. The music by Joseph Shirley and Ludwig Göransson fits the tone of the film and the editing by Matthew Kosinski and Sascha Stanton-Craven is spot on.
Bad Trip is an enjoyable film which is filled with many outstanding pranks and kudos to the actors delivering such a mad riot. Above all it a case study on common people and their frame of mind. We see some people actually coming forward trying to help them whereas many were running away like it was a crime scene. Watch it, Eric Andre, Lil Rel Howery, and Tiffany Haddish are going to take you on a supremely funny ride that won't regret going on.
