The Block Island Sound is an American sci-fi horror film directed by Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus. It stars Chris Sheffield and Michaela McManus along with Neville Archambault, Matilda Lawler, Ryan O'Flanagan, and Jim Cummings and was released on 11th March 2021 on Netflix.
Tom (Neville Archambault), a fisherman wakes up alone and confused on his fishing vessel off the bank of Block Island to a scene of disorder, including an unfilled canine chain. Sometime thereafter, Tom's son Harry (Chris Sheffield) mourns the finish of summer while drinking at a bar with companions, including Dale (Jim Cummings). While giving Dale a ride home that evening, Harry collides with and harms a bird that dies momentarily.
Different reports of unusual wonders before long become clear on the island, including huge loads of dead fish washing aground. In the interim, Harry sees unusual conduct from his dad, for example, taking his fishing boat out during the center of the night and getting static during discussion. Despite certain qualms, Harry's sister Audry (Michaela McManus) who lives on the Rhode Island terrain is sent from her position at the Environmental Protection Agency to examine the unusual natural life events alongside her associate Paul (Ryan Flanagan). Audry takes her little girl Emily (Matilda Lawler) along and chooses to remain on the island with her dad and sibling notwithstanding some waiting pressure after the demise of her mom.
As Audry and Paul examine the odd events, Harry endeavors to bond with his niece by telling Emily the best way to fish and catch frogs. Tom's conduct turns out to be progressively flighty, and one night the house is awoken by Emily's shouts while Tom stands in front of her. They credit this to night fear, however, Audry's interests in her dad are subsequently acknowledged when Tom again takes his boat out during the center of the night and disappears suddenly and completely. The neighborhood police assuage Audry and Harry to acknowledge that their dad has likely suffocated, which is before long demonstrated valid as Tom's body washes shorewards. Harry's health starts to deteriorate and he seems to be facing the same symptoms as Tom's, he's facing blackouts and losing track of time. What's causing this to Harry? What's wrong with the island?
Written by Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus, The Block Island Sound is a solid atmospheric horror movie where the town seems to be affected by an invisible force. The dead fish and birds are overused tropes of the horror genre which seems the usage will not stop anytime soon. We constantly hear growling sounds which we don't know from where it's coming and the interest grows...and I've not seen the trailer so I was expecting it to be a survival movie at first where Tom will have to fight that monster that has a growling sound.
The film shifts to Harry and his house where we see such an amazingly written sibling relationship between Harry and Audry. Harry's condition worsens more and more and hence we start to feel more for the siblings and Emily. The writer knows how to captivate its target audience to the fullest and that's where comes the insane Dale who knows everything about what's going on on this island. Whether it's government testing, or paranormal activity, or interdimensional communications - we don't know but it is happening all over the world. The stakes are high and the world-building is so terrific that these lines are enough to give the chills.
Chris Sheffield as Harry is the heart of the film. He's truly amazing and keeps your interest intact with his convincing and natural performance. Michaela McManus also shines as Audry, the supportive sister of Harry. It's because of their believable performance it is hard not to root for them. Neville Archambault as Tom is scary, Jim Cummings as Dale is impressive - he always wins the heart, Ryan O’Flanagan as Paul and Matilda Lawler as Emily have lent good support.
The cinematography by Alan Gwizdowski is outstanding. It's just perfect how everything has been captured smoothly. The film looks breathtaking and horrific at the same time. The production design by Charlie Textor is appropriate and the music by Paul Koch and sound design needs a special mention, without it, the film would have been impactless. The editing by Derek Desmond is perfect.
The Block Island Sound beautifully uses the different sci-fi aspects here as horror and fighting against the unknown is always scary and gripping for the audiences. From the first frame, it creates a world of such horror, you're bound to stick to it - but it's cautionary also, the use of electronic devices and its radiations - are these not the reason why birds are dying or are affecting our mind? Are we not responsible? This is beneath all the horror mashups we see upfront in this deliciously well-made sci-fi horror film.
