Nobody is an American Action Thriller film directed by Ilya Naishuller. It stars Bob Odenkirk along with Connie Nielsen, RZA, Aleksei Serebryakov, and Christopher Lloyd and was released on 15th April 2021 on Video on Demand.
An ordinary man Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) lives with his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) and his two children. One night, a man and a woman break into their house and asks him for money. Hutch says he uses his debit card and gave them his watch instead. Hutch's son Blake attacks the man and Hutch is about the attack another one with a golf club but he let them go. This news spreads through the neighborhood like fire. And in another night in a bus, out of frustration, Hutch beats up a group of Russian thugs who were harassing a woman but saves the one who was having trouble breathing by performing a tracheotomy on him. Later it is learned that the boy was the younger brother of a Russian gangster Yulian Kuznetsov (Aleksei Serebryakov) and he sends his men to avenge his brother and to kill Hutch.
Derek Kolstad has written the film and undoubtedly Nobody is the coolest film to witness in 2021. You have seen Bob Odenkirk in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul playing the iconic goofy lawyer Saul Goodman with brilliance. But through Nobody, he proved that he is not a Nobody. He plays an ordinary man, living his same routine every day and Nobody doesn't takes time to dive in and delivers thrills and action. In the invasion scene, Hutch didn't use his chance to kill those invaders and is a letdown in front of his son Blake and his neighbor.
Now as the movie progresses we slowly come to know that he is not what he is. Nobody's premise is not something new or has anything you've not seen before. You can pick out any Liam Neeson's or Bruce Willis' or Keanu Reeves' John Wick, they're all pretty much the same. The film has been written by John Wick's writer and that's why you will find many similarities between the two films but he brought normalcy to the main character, Hutch. John was an assassin whereas Hutch served the country once and is now working with his dominating in-laws in a metal manufacturing company.
And that's where you find that Nobody is very different from what you have seen before. We root for Hutch, seeing he is forgetting to dump the garbage or his not so good relationship with his wife Becca or with his son Blake. His daughter is the only one who hugs him. The writer and director make sure that they've given what audiences will except the film. And it will be not wrong to say, Nobody surpasses the expectation. The action sequences are sharp and thrilling and exciting and the best thing about the film is it is a very simple and clean and cut thriller.
Bob Odenkirk is solid in the role of Hutch. He is 58-59 and is generally known for doing comic roles but he amazes when he's kicking and punching and he looks convincing. The bruises and the blood and the saying of him, "I'm a Nobody" look cool and heroic. Connie Nielsen as Becca Mansell is beautiful and shines throughout the film. Christopher Lloyd as David Mansell, Aleksei Serebryakov as Yulian Kuznetsov, RZA as Harry Mansell, and others all have done a reasonably fine job.
The cinematography by Pawel Pogorzelski is sharp and the action sequences are amazingly captured and appear clean. The music by David Buckley is enjoyable and cool just like the film. The editing by William Yeh and Evan Schiff is perfect with no boring moments.
Nobody is a perfect alternative if you're missing John Wick or Taken. The film is funny and serious at the same time and it is very hard to organize such a scene, and Breaking Bad also did that compellingly. Bob Odenkirk is riveting to watch as an action hero and is amazing throughout the film. Watch it, there is not a single reason I see to not see this sharp thriller which, as said, surpasses every expectation of yours.
