Vikings is a historical action drama television series created by Michael Hirst. This new second part of the 6th season stars Alexander Ludwig, Georgia Hirst, Alex Høgh Andersen, Jordan Patrick Smith, Marco Ilsø, Peter Franzén, Adam Copeland, Ragga Ragnars, Alicia Agneson, Lucy Martin, and Oran Glynn Donovan. The new 10 episodes were released on 30th December 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
**SPOILER ALERT** Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) who was shown unconscious and cold in the 10th episode, is not dead yet. He is brought to Kattegat by boat whereas, in Vestfold, Norway, Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) and all are shown cheering and enjoying and celebrating their victory but Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) is very much sure that Bjorn couldn't die so easily. In Iceland, Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) is thinking to sail west. King Harald (Peter Franzén) is now held captive under Oleg but somehow he escapes. King Hakon and his armies arrive at the door of Kattegat to help them fighting the Rus. Bjorn's condition is very critical and the Rus are on their way to Kattegat. Ivar and Igor (Oran Glynn Donovan) Oleg's nephew, are conspiring against Prince Oleg to overthrow him from the throne. Reaching there all are quite shocked to see Bjorn in his armor and with his sword, but powerless, and is killed in the battle. Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) pays him a farewell and tells that the kings and queens, the Jarls and Earls of Norway responded to Bjorn's message and now are there for Kattegat's help. The first episode ends with the lines, "Bjorn Ironside was victorious, which is the reason his name will never be forgotten. He was the son of Ragnar but in some ways even greater than Ragnar."
Now the king is dead and now has no ruler but the danger is still there and at any time Ivar with Kiev's army can attack Kattegat. Erik (Eric Johnson) tells one of Bjorn's wife Gunnhild to stand for election and Ingrid (Lucy Martin), the second wife of Bjorn also stands for the election who has no intention to sit on the throne but she will as she's pregnant with Bjorn's baby. Ubba with Torvi (Georgia Hirst) and all his followers have to leave the barren Island and is now dying of hunger on the boat on the ocean, in the middle of nowhere. King Harald becomes the king of Kattegat and marries Ingrid and Gunnhild joins Bjorn in Valhalla. Igor kills Prince Oleg with the help of Ivar, Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø), and Prince Dir (Lenn Kudrjawizki) and becomes the Prince of Kiev. Ivar and Hvitserk return to their homeland Kattegat and Herald somehow convinces the people to accept both of them despite Hvitserk killed Lagertha and Ivar attacked Kattegat. Here they make a plan to conquer King Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) and Wessex and of its riches.
Written by Michael Hirst, these concluding 10 episodes are no different from its earlier seasons. It also deals with capturing, conquering, betraying, making allies, and all. The Floki's track proved to be a major fallback for the sixth season's first part, the same goes with the second part also in the case of Ubbe's adventure in search of a settlement and Floki.
The 11th episode of the sixth season sets your expectation very high with what's coming in the next episodes but sadly everything is so slow and the old, the unfolding drama is never too engaging. Bjorn gets an epic farewell and died as a hero and all the responsibilities now come to the shoulder of the other three sons of Ragnar to keep you invested in their adventures.
The 5th season marked the rise of one of the best characters of Vikings, Ivar The Boneless. His insanity and unruly nature grabbed the audience and the same happens again here in this sixth season. Ivar is everywhere and is who'll make you hooked on to the slow and long finale episodes. From the 17th episode, the velocity of the show grows and somewhat becomes interesting.
With at last Ubbe and Torvi finding their Greenland and the entry of King Alfred and the epic battles are worth watching here. The whole journey takes a turn where faith plays an important role here for every character, Hvitserk's last scene renouncing Odin seems to be a bit contrived and out of the blue. In one scene Gunnhild says, "Perhaps the golden age of Vikings is gone" is a most appropriate line which defines the downfall of this show from its third season but it still has a stable IMDb rating of 8.5.
"One day everyone will know of Ivar The Boneless", this line says it all for the kind of performance Alex Høgh Andersen delivered. He's undoubtedly the star of Vikings and his strong presence will be remembered alongside Travis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick, and Alexander Ludwig. Marco Ilsø as Hvitserk is amazing. He gets a limited screen presence in comparison to the other two. But he manages to shine thanks to his complex character and stands from others. Jordan Patrick Smith is another star. He is outstanding as Ubbe. Despite his character doesn't get any arc or grows more than what already is, he still stands on his own with his strong performance. Ragga Ragnars as Gunnhild is effective and Lucy Martin as Ingrid also impresses. Georgia Hirst as Torvi is just okay.
The cinematography by Peter Robertson and Owen McPolin is terrific. The shows look visually gorgeous and are filled with stunning views and are hard to take your eyes off. The battle sequences are also shot perfectly and amazingly well. The greyish-blue tint works in the favor of the show to make it appear darker and more intense and the music by Trevor Morris is the strength of the show. Production Design by Mark Geraghty is perfect and costume design by Susan O'Connor Cave is precise and top-notch work.
Vikings Season 6 Part 2 is a satisfying goodbye. The last line of the show is "Is that the end?". Don't know whether it is just a line or something else is coming soon. The storyline here is, as usual, is a series of events and becomes slightly sluggish at the middle portions but picks up again after the 17th episode. The energetic and brutal battle sequences and powerful performances from everyone make this finale a watchable show. It has its demerits but just watch it for the last time and for your own good all episodes are now available for binge-watching. A spin-off series Vikings: Valhalla is on the way which is believed to be set many years after the events of this Vikings and this spin-off will release on Netflix. So the journey has not ended yet!
Rating:- 3/5
