Malasaña 32 - Review : Creepy Ghost and Atmosphere and Nothing More!!!

Malasaña 32 : Film Review

Malasaña 32 is a Spanish Horror film directed by Albert Pintó. It stars Begoña Vargas, Iván Marcos, Bea Segura, Sergio Castellanos, and Iván Renedo in the key role.  This film was released on 22nd October 2020 on Shudder.

The story is set in 1976, where the Olmedo family has arrived in their dream city Madrid, from their village and now has started living in an apartment in Malasna 32. The apartment has a history of death and soon the Olmedo family starts to face something unnatural, tormented by the ghost of an old lady, who wants to take Rafael (Ivan Renedo) with her.

The story and screenplay are by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, David Orea, and Salvador S. Molina. None of the above offers anything new. It follows the pattern of incidents every haunted apartment film follows. The film tries to scare with cheap scary scenes, overpowered by the background music which doesn't help the film at all. The biggest problem lies in the script level which is not very exciting and full of cliches, and if you are a horror film addict, then for you, it will be very much easy to predict what's coming next. The characters when first appears, I felt this movie is going to be different from those stereotypical haunted apartment film, as they were looking solid, and well established, their suffering and struggle were very well portrayed, but that's it, after some time the writers don't care to develop that more and follows the cliched path to uncover what's wrong with the house. Apart from all the downsides, it manages to deliver some amazing (not scary) horror scenes, which will catch your attention instantly, the devilish look of the ghost, which look like a witch, is an eye-grabber, and the performances are terrific.

Begoña Vargas as Amparo, is excellent at portraying all the suffering and uneasiness. Iván Marcos as Manolo has a powerful presence and Bea Segura as Candela is also very good, she has to smile in her work while talking to any customer, but she can't with all these unnatural things going on in her house, and she's great at delivering that expressions, and Iván Renedo as Rafael, the youngest child, has also given his best.

The cinematography by Daniel Sosa Segura is terrific, backed up by the perfect production design, amazing lighting, and music. Malasaña 32 is the same as any other horror movie, with a paper-thin plot and screenplay full of scenes that we've seen too often. If you're in the mood of watching a horror movie with a creepy, spooky atmosphere and an unsettling ghost, then go for it.

Rating:- 2.5/5
