The Power Review : A Well-Made Horror film with a strong Message.

The Power is a British Horror film directed by Corinna Faith. It stars Rose Williams along with Diveen Henry, Shakira Rahman, Charlie Carrick, Gbemisola Ikumelo and was released on 8th April 2021 on Shudder and BookMyShow Stream.

So it's 1974, the UK government is at war and the economy is in crisis. To conserve the power, blackouts have been ordered which leaves the nation into darkness every night. Val (Rose Williams) is going to start her new job as a nurse in East London Hospital. On her very first day, there is chaos in the hospital, every patient is being shifted to Central Hospital and Val is appointed to be in the Intensive Care Unit for the whole night by the matron (Diveen Henry). Val thinks that she is not ready for a dark shift but she doesn't want to lose her job on the first day. She stays but there is something evil in that hospital lurking in the dark halls finding a vessel. Is Val the vessel? Why that evil chooses Val?

Corinna Faith has also written the film and it's been quite sensibly written not like any other low-budget horror movie delivering cheap jump scares and going completely bonkers in a bad way. The Power cleverly used a historical event to create a build-up for the film and that's smart. The main character Valerie has been through something horrible in her past when she used to live in a Catholic girl's home. That incident torments her and so she hates dark.

But she has to work in a night shift and that too in dark and that's when a malevolent spirit attacks her. The film is not that scary but it has a strong creepy atmosphere, very little visibility to what is at the corner of the room. And that's spooky. It has even tried to deliver one masterpiece horrific moment from Suspiria, yes, when Olga's body is crushed and crushed and squeezed. Though that will drive you crazy if you see it in Suspiria but not in The Power. Faith's direction is sharp and she doesn't go haywire and everything is straightforward. The film has a strong message at the end and instead of making you feel scared it will make you feel happy.

Rose Williams is the "power" house of the film. Her angelic face and voice bring innocence and vulnerability to her performance. She is simply good. Shakira Rahman as Saba also shines and Emma Rigby as Babs also leaves her mark. Diveen Henry as Matron is just perfect. Gbemisola Ikumelo as Comfort, Charlie Carrick as Franklyn, and others are good.

The cinematography by Laura Bellingham is spectacular. This is how you create an uncomfortable space in a horror film. We're not there so it is up to the cinematographer to make that impact. The production design by Francesca Massariol is just perfect and the music by Gazelle Twin and Max De Wardener is haunting and spooky. The editing by Rebecca Llyod and Tommy Boulding is okay.

The Power is not that great but it is a well-made horror film by Corinna Faith. The setting of the film, the camera work, and the music, and Rose Williams' beautiful performance are worth watching. So stream it, BookMyShow Stream has it in Hindi too. This message-oriented horror film is something that you've to see if you love watching Horror films.
