Kaali Khuhi - Review : Visually Creepy but a Weak movie!!

Kaali Khuhi : Film Review

Kaali Khuhi is a Hindi Horror film directed by Terrie Samundra, written by Terrie Samundra and David Walter Lech. It stars Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Riva Arora, and Satyadeep Mishra in the main roles. This film was released on 30th October 2020 on Netflix.

A 10-year-old girl Shivangi (Riva Arora) lives with her father Darshan (Satyadeep Mishra) and mother Priya (Sanjeeda Sheikh), but they had to go to their father's village as Darshan's mother is very ill. Reaching there, Satya Maasi (Shabana Azmi), opens the door and is the neighbor of Darshan's mother. But suddenly strange things start to happen, Shivangi sees a girl's spirit in the house that kills Darshan's mother. Then Priya starts feeling sick and Darshan's mind is not stable now. Satya Maasi tells Shivangi about the old curse of the village. Once a group of old women followed a very unholy and wicked tradition of killing newborn girl child and throwing them in a black well (Kaali Khuhi) at a farm in the village, from then the village is cursed and Satya Maasi tells Shivangi that she's the one who can break the curse and bring a change.

The story and screenplay by Terrie Samundra and David Walter Lech are very poor and not at all convincing. It could've been great as the story has potential but they failed to make it interesting or exciting enough to get invested. However the mystery still works and the film surely gives a creepy vibe, full score at that department. Some of the scenes are not quite clear, and some of them seem to be forced into the story. The plot build up is nice and has an important message to convey but fails to entertain. The director was more keen to showcase it as a horror story as a result she messed everything up. The scenes are full of actors screaming, shouting and bloods that's quite intense, severe and lifts up the powerful horror image the film has to offer. But that's it.

Shabana Azmi as Satya Massi, is phenomenal, but the biggest attraction is Riva Arora as Shivangi (Last seen in Uri The Surgical Strike), she has given a stellar performance. Whether this film will be a hit or not, but this character will surely be counted as one her best. Sanjeeda Sheikh and Satyadeep Mishra has also lent a good support and are quite effective. The cinematography by Sejal Shah, Production Design by Angelica Monica Bhowmick, and the sound design are stronger and more impactful than the story and successfully presents this as a true horror movie.

Kaali Khuhi directed by Terrie Samundra is a very weak movie, delivers a strong message but fails to create any impact. She definitely has a vision how to make a strong horror movie, but the story has to be a strong one too. If you love watching horror movies then only watch it, otherwise skip it.

Rating:- 1.5/5
