Taish - Review : Strong Performances and best of Zee5!!!

Taish : Series Review

Taish is an Indian Hindi-language thriller drama film directed by Bejoy Nambiar. The film stars Pulkit Samrat, Kriti Kharbanda, Jim Sarbh, Sanjeeda Shaikh and Harshvardhan Rane in the main roles. The film was released on ZEE5 on 29 October 2020 as a feature film of 2 hours 23 minutes and as a six-episode series of 30 minutes each.

Pali (Harshvardhan Rane) is a gangster and the love of his life Jahaan (Sanjeeda Shaikh) is getting married to Kuljinder (Abhimanyu Singh), whom Pali calls his elder brother and is heartbroken now. The story shifts to another family, where Rohan (Jim Sarbh) is a doctor and has come to his home to attend his brother (Ankur Rathee) Krish's wedding. Rohan is then joined by his girlfriend Arfa (Kriti Kharbanda) and Sunny (Pulkit Samrat). At a pub, when Rohan sees Kuljinder, he suddenly gets a panic attack and when he tells the reason behind his extreme reaction to Sunny after seeing Kuljinder, Sunny impulsively goes to the pub and kills Kuljinder. Now Pali wants vengeance. So the question is why Sunny Killed Kuljinder?

The story by Bejoy Nambiar is interesting but it's the screenplay by Bejoy Nambiar, Anjali Nair, and Kartik R. Iyer, that's quite intriguing and absorbing. The series starts with the washroom fight sequence between Pulkit and Abhimanyu, which is so slickly choreographed and well captured, it'll remind you of the washroom fight sequence from the Mission Impossible Fallout, the levels didn't match but the fight scene is so finely executed and edited it catches your eyes instantly. The series is captivating because the series is not so straight forward but follows an unparallel route to uncover every twists. When Pali brokes into Krish's marriage party and threatens the whole family, it gives you the vibe of Undekhi, a gem from Sony LIV. But Bejoy Nambiar, who has also given amazing movies like Shaitan, David and Wazir in the past, is surely not in the mood of walking on the easy path here and delivers shocks and surprises you briskly to hook you up in his story. What Taish suffers is the establishment of the characters, except for Pali, portraying him as a gangster but presenting him in like he's the most messed one, is effective and the most humane character in the series. Rohan's pain and trauma and what he suffered as a child, is just thrown at you with some lines which you can understand but we can't sympathise with him. Same goes with Sunny's character, which seems to be forced into this revenge drama but he justifies himself by saying that he's like a matchstick in a gunpowder factory. But the thing is you won't feel any of the downsides it has as the drama is so packed and overstuffed. It was a shame to see the central female characters that got sidelined by these three male characters.

Jim Sarbh as Rohan Kalra is excellent, and shines in that particular scene where he gets sort of panic attack seeing Kuljinder at the pub. Pulkit Samrat has got better in every movie and here he's in a great form and has done a commendable job, be it any fight sequence or emotional scenes. The biggest surprise was Harshvardhan Rane as Pali, he excels in every scene with brilliance and has given the most effective and heart touching performance among others. Kriti Kharabanda as Arfa has a little to offer but she gets one scenes in which she proves that she's here to stay. Sanjeeda Shaikh as Jahaan is also impressive, she's important here but really doesn't have anything solid to do.

The cinematography by Harshvir Oberai is worth mentioning, his slick camera movement captures everything effortlessly and the fight sequences are a treat to watch. Special mention about the production design and Location Management, that are top-notch and gives you the feel that you're watching a big-budget action thriller drama movie. The background music is very apt and goes with the mood of the story and some songs that are situational, but are loaded with heavy lyrics and instantly clicks.

Taish by Bejoy Nambiar is a solid approach to this action-thriller genre, delivering not just action but also showcases the character's mental pain and traumas and emotions, that many action movies skips to show. It could have been long, 10 episodes rather than 6 episodes and could've explored the deepness of the characters at a satisfying level. But sadly Taish offers a complete story and there's no place to stretch it to season 2. Easily the ZEE5's best this year.

Rating:- 3.5/5
