Nocturne is an American Supernatural Horror Film written and directed by Zu Quirke. It stars Sydney Sweeney, Madison Iseman, Jacques Colimon, and Ivan Shaw in the main roles. Produced by Jason Blum, this film was released on 13th October 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
Juliet (Sydney Sweeney) and Vivian (Madison Iseman) are twin sisters and amazing pianists. But unfortunately one of them gets into their dream school Julliard, a music Academy, and that's where their rivalry starts. Vivian who is a few seconds elder than Juliet is a free, charismatic woman who also has a boyfriend, Max (Jacques Colimon) whereas Juliet is shy and vulnerable, no one takes her or her dreams seriously. There is this girl, Moira Wilson (Ji Eun Hwang), who commits suicide while playing "Devil's Trill Sonata" with her violin. One day, Juliet finds a mysterious book which was of Moira Wilson, which mistakenly falls on the floor by a worker who just cleaned Moira's mailbox. Juliet picks it up and finds many unusual drawings with horrific and satanic figures in it. There was also the music sheets of Devil's Trill Sonata play. She plays it and something supernatural starts to happen with her. She sees a big yellow sun-like object which follows her everywhere. There's also a change in her behavior and nature. What's causing this? Is Moira's theory book possessing her? Is she going to die like Moira? Or she'll kill Vivian? Watch the movie for the answers.
The film's story and screenplay have been written by Zu Quirke and it's quite interesting. The story is about rivalry and jealousy among the twin sisters competing for the annual function play at their academy. The way everything unfolds is very intriguing, the way the characters have been introduced is commendable, especially of Juliet and Vivian. The characters have depth and are well carved. From being shy and underconfident to being wild and free and careless, Juliet is one of the best-written characters I've come across in any film. The film surely has a feel of Black Swan and The Perfection and it's good though to take inspiration and surprisingly, it worked here. The writer has taken ample time for the development of the characters, and it absorbs you from the start. Sydney Sweeney as Juliet has done an extraordinary job, she's believable and I can say it's one of the best performances of this year. Madison Iseman as Vivian has lent very strong support, she's very natural and impresses every time she's on-screen. The rest of the actors have also given their best. The cinematography by Carmen Cabena is good. The production design by Cencil Gentry is of a high standard. The music plays a very important role, it's this what's the sisters are competing for. Trust me, it's heart touching.
Nocturne directed by Zu Quirke is not novel, it gives you the feel of Whiplash and The Perfection, but the good thing is that it never bores you. The ending is gory and it is not for the faint of hearts. Yes, sometimes it becomes predictable but it is enjoyable, you want to stay with the characters till the end, that's the importance of having a strong character build-up. It's a well-made film, easily one of the finest in 2020. This is Zu Quirke's first movie as director and almost everything works in her favor. Stream it on Amazon Prime.
