A Simple Murder (Season 1) : Series Review

A Simple Murder is an Indian Dark Comedy Web Television Series directed by Sachin Pathak. It stars Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sushant Singh, Amit Sial, Priya Anand, Tejasvi Singh Alhawat, Durgesh Kumar, Ankur Pandey, and Vijay Raaz in main roles. This series was released on 20th November 2020 on Sony LIV.

Manish (Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub) is a start-up entrepreneur who is mired in debt, he feels that his luck is asleep and is married to Richa (Priya Anand), who is now bored with this marriage, has a secret relationship with her married boss Rahul (Ayaz Khan), but she is not known to the fact that Rahul is cheating on her too, having his rangreliyaan with Madhu.

Manish is looking for an investor to accelerate his business. One day he is called to meet an investor, but due to some misunderstanding, he reaches out to Pandit (Yashpal Sharma), who treats him as a contract killer and gives him five lakh rupees to kill a young girl. This girl is Priya (Tejaswi Singh), daughter of Mantri Pran, who is going to have a love marriage with a Muslim boy Usman (Ankur Pandey). The Minister is not in the favor of this, so he wants to get rid of his daughter forever through Pandit. Seeing five lakh rupees, Manish decides to kill Priya and pay the bank's EMI from these five lakh rupees. In the evening, Manish meets hitman Himmat Singh (Sushant Singh) at the wine table at Prithvi Bar. Himmat Singh advises him not to look into the eyes of the person to be killed.

Madhu is also fooling her other boyfriend hitman Santosh (Amit Sial) as she is preparing to flee abroad with Rahul with the five crore rupees she got from Santosh. Priya and Usman have been accommodated by Pandit in the house next to Madhu. But Manish accidentally kills Madhu and goes home with five crore rupees. Seeing these rupees, Richa runs away with the money. Here Himmat Singh finds out that Pandit Ji considered Manish as his man and gave him five lakh rupees. So he reaches Manish's house. Now Manish and Himmat Singh go in search of Richa.

On the other hand, Santosh finds out that someone killed his girlfriend Madhu and took away her five crores. He investigates in his own way, then he suspects Rahul. Now everyone is looking for five crore rupees. Himmat Singh and Santosh both work for Pandit, but now they are thirsty for each other's blood. The police and Pandit Ji want to eliminate Priya and Usman. Suddenly Manish and Himmat Singh decide that Priya and Usman have to be kept alive. Then the story goes through many twists and turns.

Writers Akhilesh Jaiswal and Pratik Payodhi do come up with sly humor and surprising twists from time to time. But many events are repetitive. There is stabbing in the back, betrayal, murders, and so on. In the sixth episode, the narrative becomes a bit serious. But the climax is very messy. As a result, he is not able to impress the audience as much as he could in the climax especially.

In this way, the writers have made the false and bitter experiences of life as the base of the story. The root cause behind the killings in this show is greed. This greed is also a bitter truth. In it, those who are fed up with their worldly life, some are trying to achieve more, some to secure their future and some are trapped in this mess just because of their greed.

Nevertheless, I have to admit that I was so hooked on the drama and was constantly thinking about what's going to happen next and what will be the climax. The writers had written and delivered some of the genuinely hilarious scenes in the first half of the series, some come as a silly one too but none of the jokes falls flat, that's the win-win here.

The drama never feels that real, despite you will continuously pondering about the characters, about the lead one and the antagonists too. The writers never cared to develop more of the characters, than just flying on the crust and showing their hurdles, rather than going deep and exploring that someone is there actually caring about Manish and Richa or could have told that they're alone in this greedy world.

Even the central couple who are the root cause of this mess, are not given that much of screentime or emotions to feel for them. They're just standing in the corner unharming the drama and the actions the lead actors are in. That's just ridiculous, given it's a very tight script and offers a lot to handle, maybe that's why they didn't go to that depth or not even cared to put right some of its downsides.

The acting of Sushant Singh and Amit Sial is brilliant. Sushant Singh is not easy to ignore, he is brilliant as a human hitman and whenever he says "Are Suno!" you'll burst into laughter. Amit Sial is no less a treat in the role of Santosh. While reciting the shayaris, the calm mind with which he commits murders is strangely remarkable.

Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub is a good actor, there are no two opinions. He does full justice to his character Manish. In one scene he shares his pain with a rat with a face full of tears, and that monologue scene is amazing and his brilliant acting comes to the fore. He was the protagonist hero in the film 'Sameer' in 2017, after which he has got this second chance, in which he proved that he is a great actor.
The manner in which actor Yashpal Sharma has brought the character of Pandit Ji to life is amazing. By the way, the writer and director have not given much detail to his character. But there are definitely some good dialogues on his part.

Vikram Kochhar is as usual is good in the role of a police inspector. While Gopal Dutt has managed to bring some laugh, though it's an unrealistic character. Durgesh Kumar's performance in the role of Prithvi Bar's waiter Shankar is very good, he steals the scene in which he appears and brokes out into saying about his struggles.

Priya Anand is very decent in Richa's character. She seems innocent in some scenes. But there is a lack of confidence in her as an artist and needs to learn a lot and work hard. Tejaswi Singh and Ankur Pandey are just unused and shallow characters from this show.

The cinematography by S. Bharatwaaj is quite average but terrific in some places. Dialogues by Prateek Payodhi and additional dialogues by Sachin Pathak are sharp, witty, and funny and is the real hero of the show. Background music by Karsh Kale is fresh and new and goes very well with the mood of the show. Production Design by Akhilesh Kumar is just average and sometimes feels artificial to me, but it's okay.

There has always been good content to be seen on Sony LIV, whether it is Scam 1992 or Undekhi or Gullak. Similarly, now the series 'A Simple Murder' has been released which is a package of perfect entertainment for your weekend. The writers of the series have maintained the arc of its characters in such a way that till the end you won't be able to predict what is going to happen next. Yes, somewhere in the series it may seem that the same thing is being told again and again and the shocking climax was not at all expected and comes out of the blue. In spite of that, the drama and the mess is enough to captivate you to the end, and you won't get a single second of a break as the series is packed with surprises and zigzag which comes frequently and the writers make it impossible for its audience to feel bore. Despite its glitches, it's a strong contender to all the shows out there. It's a show with a satirical smile on love dreams, aspirations, needs, greed, hunger, faith, destiny, sin, and virtue. It is an accurate depiction of how the humanity and morality of a human being changes from time to time. If you have not seen it, stream it now, you don't know what you're missing out.

Rating:- 3.5/5
