Spontaneous - Review : A Love Story like never seen before!!!

Spontaneous : Film Review

Spontaneous is an American Sci-fi Romantic film directed by Brian Duffield. It stars Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Hayley Law, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel, and Yvonne Orji in the lead roles. It was released on 6th October 2020 and is now available via Video On Demand.

Mara (Katherine Langford) is studying in high school and has only a few months left to graduate but suddenly a classmate of hers explodes leaving all others in the class, stunned. Scared, confused, everyone leaves chaotically. On the same night, a random guy text Mara telling that he likes her from the very beginning and that turns out to be Dylan (Charlie Plummer). Mara also has a best friend Tessa (Hayley Law), who tells if she explodes she's taking Mara with her. The explosion is happening, again and again, students are dying. So what will happen to Mara and Dylan's love story?

The story is based on the novel Spontaneous by Aaron Starmer and the film's screenplay is by Brian Duffield. The students of Covington High School are literally blowing up for some unexplained reasons will give you the chills but here the writer has presented everything in a black comedy manner. Duffield is very clear about his vision for the movie, the screenplay is engaging from the start, and gets very tensed in some situations, whenever the camera focuses on some random characters you'll think he/she is going to explode. That's the impact of the film. Duffield's script is metaphorical, as Dylan says to Mara that he confesses to her thinking there might not any tomorrow for them, so they have to fully live their present and make the best of it. Their cute chemistry is the highlight of the film and so is their establishment. The dynamics between the two best friends Tessa and Mara feels authentic, you'll pray that they don't explode.

Katherine Langford is outstanding as Mara, she has a strong presence and shines in the last half hour of the film. Charlie Plummer as Dylan is quite good and likable, he's sweet, shy, and very effective. Hayley Law as Tessa is terrific.
The cinematography by Aaron Marton is the other best thing in the movie, the camera moves swiftly capturing the horrors and the beauty of the film simultaneously. Production design, background score, and visual effects are worth mentioning. They boost the impact of every scene and the result is, the movie is never boring.

Spontaneous directed by Brian Duffield is a masterpiece. It will surely gain cult movie status in the future. This was his debut film as a director but has written scripts for many movies like Underwater, Babysitter, Love and Monsters, etc in the past. This is a youth-centric film and has a clear message for them. This movie was made before the covid outbreak but has a quarantine scene, watching it will give you the mirror of our present situation. Till the end, the reason for the explosion of these students are not known, the fear is that now they've to live with it for the rest of their lives.

Rating:-  4/5
