Dark 7 White (Season 1) : Series Review

Dark 7 White is an Indian Hindi Crime Thriller Series, directed by Sattwik Mohanty, and is based on the 2014 novel Dark White by Shweta Brijpuria. It stars Sumit Vyas, Nidhi Singh, Jatin Sarna, Monica Chaudhary, Taniya Kalra, Kunj Anand, Shekhar Chaudhary, Rachit Bahal, Sumit Singh, Madhurima Roy, and Sanjay Batra in main roles. It was released on 24th November 2020 on ALT Balaji and Zee5.

The 'Dark 7 White' series is basically a murder mystery, but the story goes hand in hand with political maneuvers, conspiracies, strained relationships, and feuds. Set in the royal and political background of Rajasthan, this series starts with Yudhveer Singh a.k.a. Yudi (Sumeet Vyas), who has become the youngest CM. Yudhveer Singh belongs to the royal family of Rajasthan. There is royal blood in the veins, but democracy in the country has taken away that sense of power, due to which the princes ruled for centuries. Due to this tenacity, gaining strength has become the weakness of a warrior. In a democracy, this power comes from the chair. Therefore, he plots to sit on the highest seat of power in the state.

Yudi kills his girlfriend Tashi (Madhurima Roy). To win the trust of CM Bhairavnath Singh, he traps his daughter Daisy (Nidhi Singh) in a love trap, and ultimately he gets to sit on the CM's chair. However, he does not win this seat by-election, but there is a shocking conspiracy behind it. However, he is assassinated before he can sit on the chair of the CM when he is going to take oath as the CM with his army. The CM's murder is being investigated by ACP Abhimanyu Singh (Jatin Sarna), who has 7 people on his radar. All of them are close to Yudhvir and had helped him to climb the ladder of success from student politics to state politics within 10 years. These are the seven people - Neelakshi/Neelu (Monica Chaudhary), who is Yudhveer's college time girlfriend and whom he has been using according to his own. The other suspect is Yogesh Kataria (Shekhar Chaudhary), who was Yudhvir's rival during student politics, but later became the vanguard of his game. The third suspect is Kush Lamba (Kunj Anand), who is Yogesh's gay lover and considers himself a contender for the CM post. The fourth suspect is Shashank (Sumit Singh), who is the husband and lawyer of Greshma (Tanya Kalra), a friend of the war hero. The fifth suspect is Greshma, who is now the owner of a channel. The sixth suspect is Dhaval (Rachit Bahal), who has been with Yudhvir since college and is now in charge of his security. The seventh suspect is Yudhvir's grandfather Shamsher Singh (Sanjay Batra), with whom Yudhvir does not get along at all. All of them have their own reasons for killing the warrior.

The story adaptation and screenplay are by Mohinder Pratap Singh & Mayuri Roychoudhury and the additional screenplay is by Pranjal Saxena and Snehil Dixit Mehra. The series starts on a promising note, but it speedily dives into the dull zone. After the murder of Yudhvir in the first episode, the further story goes on with the investigation of the murder and the incidents of the past, which are told in Yudhvir's voice over. Some incidents of the past are also revealed during the interrogation of ACP Abhimanyu. It is a fast-paced murder mystery that fans of this genre will love. However, at the very beginning of the series, so many characters come together that it takes a lot of effort to keep the characters apart. Five episodes are spent synchronizing the characters and the story. From the sixth episode things clear up and then the interest in the story grows and the last two episodes are very exciting.

To break the old grooves of politics through the characters and to make the characters look uber cool, fierce English mixed abuses and erotic scenes have been used in the writing. On the other hand, at the ideological level, the picture of contradiction also comes out. While the sense of guilt has been shown regarding homosexuality among the male characters, the female characters do not fail to display their free sexuality by bouncing their bras in the air.

Mohinder Pratap Singh and Mayuri Roy Chowdhury have speed in the screenplay. The story is shown in Rajasthan, but the familiarity of the Rajasthani language is missing in the dialogues of Pranjal Saxena, Shashank Kunwar, and Snehil Dixit. It is rather very childish and immature, especially the ones that come as Yudi's voice-over which after a point of time becomes annoying. There's one dialogue, Yudi says "when dreams and sex are left incomplete, you don't get an orgasm." Just see how nonsensical it is. Director Satvik Mohanty has not paid much attention to the nuances of Yudhvir's political transformation, and the triggering of him to become the CM is also very contrived and not solid at all.

Sumeet Vyas and Jatin Sarna dominate the entire series. Apart from these two, no other actor can make an impact and are just fine. The cinematography by Sandeep Yadav is gorgeous, but he could have done better in exploring the beauty of Jaipur. Yet the series looks fresh and beautiful and so is the production design by Ajay Verekar, which is a treat to the eyes. The background music is very unnecessarily loud sometimes.

To sum up, Dark 7 White is still watchable and delivers a surprisingly strong and unpredictable ending, and has good performances but lacks depth and logic and becomes quite ludicrous sometimes. If you like murder mystery then go for it, otherwise skip it, you'll not miss anything.
