Greenland - Review : A Heart-Touching Disaster Film!!!

Greenland : Film Review

Greenland is an American disaster film directed by Ric Roman Waugh. The film stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, and David Denman in main roles. It was released on 13th October 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.

John Garrity (Gerard Butler) is living a hollow married life with his wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their son is also a diabetic, so that's why they stick around pretending to be fine. But there's the news everyone is talking about is a big massive comet that is about to strike the Earth anytime. Allison request John to go to the store to get some beer as some guests are coming, and in the store, he gets a message, a presidential alert, stating that their family has been selected for emergency shelter location and are asked to report to the military base, reaching home he sees all the guests are waiting for the party to get started, and BAMM! the comet strikes somewhere very near to their home leaving everyone stunned, and then there is again an alert telecast starts on the TV, saying that the John, Allison and his son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) has been selected for the emergency shelter location and John gets a phone call from the US Department of Homeland Security stating the same. He tells Allison to packs bags, leaving the guests in shock as to why John got the alert and not them. Ignoring all the cries and beggings of their neighbor to take their daughter, and beating the traffic, they made it to the base finally, where Nathan gets rejected due to his illness, while John headed back to his car to get his sons meds. Returning to the base John couldn't find Allison and Nathan because of the chaos and this was just the scenes from the first few minutes and to know what happens next, watch the movie!

The film's script is written by Chris Sparling, which is excellent. The film surely has some overused but mandatory scenes lend from many disaster movies, like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, but what differs Greenland is it's the treatment of not just being heavy on graphics disaster movies but to be impactful and moving. The script fully concentrates on the main characters John, Allison, and Nathan giving them a realistic feel and making them logical and reasonable enough to get easily connected, which usually many Disaster movies skip. It's not only surviving the extinction-level comet striking the Earth but also shows the pain and struggles of their rough marriage. Greenland focuses more on little things keeping the world ending thing as a backdrop.

The scenes are very effective and hard-hitting, like when a neighbor begs them to take their daughter with them so that at least their daughter could survive, it shattered me from inside, it was that impactful! and there were loads of them, in which the main characters develop more,  making their actions believable and convincing. And it's because of that, the news regarding the Clarke (the comet) is equally impactful. Like when the news comes on the radio about the largest fragments of the comet that will strike near Europe, will shake you. It further informs, it's a nine-mile wide fragment, that will generate 1000 foot high tsunamis and winds that will travel faster than the speed of the sound, killing 75% of all the plants and animals life on Earth. I mean WOW! it's enough to hook you up, as the film offers many disastrous scenes that become scarier as the film proceeds.

Gerard Butler (300, London Has Fallen, Geostorm) as John Garrity brings the inner feelings of the character authentically, and the same goes for Morena Baccarin (Venessa from Deadpool) who is very impressive as Allison and shines in emotional scenes. What to say about the star Roger Dale Floyd who wins your heart with his earnest and committed performance as Nathan.

The cinematography is by Dana Gonzales which is stunning and some of the scenes are breathtaking, it's a nice looking film with a perfect production design by Clay A. Griffith, with quite good special effects and background score, everything here is just spot on.

Greenland directed by Ric Roman Waugh doesn't only deal with the inevitable danger for the Earth but also polishes out its key character so wonderfully, it's hard not to root for them. The real relation between the leads is the biggest victory of the film and focuses on mainly characters and to bring out their good and bad in such a catastrophe scenario. A perfect movie to watch now, where the world is now fighting the COVID 19, you might even relate with some scenes which have become very conventional now.

Rating:- 3.5/5
