Possessor Uncut : Film Review

Possessor Uncut is a science fiction horror film written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg. The film stars Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the main roles. This film was released on 2nd October 2020 on VOD.

Holly (Gabrielle Graham), looking for a spot in her head, inserts a pin in her skull. Then she goes to attends a party, and brutally kills a man with a knife, stabbing her innumerable times, and says "Pull Me Out", but there is no one in the room, she puts a gun in her mouth but can't pull the trigger, cops then comes in, she points the gun at them, the cops shot her. Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) wakes up in a bizarre facility and later is taken a memory test by Girder (Jennifer Jason Leigh), in which she has to identify the things related to her from childhood. She's was actually controlling the mind of Holly and is now given the next job. Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott) is kidnapped by that organization, and a device is implanted in his brain so that Vos can control him. Colin (possessed by Vos) has to kill a billionaire John Parse (Sean Bean), and her daughter Ava Parse (Tuppence Middleton).

The story and screenplay by Brandon Cronenberg are very unique and strange at its best. The film prologue is horrific and sets the mood of the film. The film can be confusing at times and has mysterious and strange vibes throughout. The film will remind you of The Clockwork Orange and Under The Skin. The film is very high on brutality, blood, and gore, and you'll need a strong stomach to sit through it. The lighting, the reds, and blues fill the frames, a bizarre strong sex scene, the blurring and changing of the characters between Colin and Vos, are some terrific scenes which are strangely unsettling and erotic. A lot more could have been explored for Vos' character, a female mind trapped inside a male body, but it follows the story straight without even clawing some of these. Vos' character is excellently written, she's doing her job, other than that, she's observing on the person that's going to be in her next mission. Observing their habits, how they talk, like when she's kinda rehearsing " Darling!", "What have you got there!" are shown with brilliance. She's getting so deeply involved in other identities, she's forgetting hers. Does Tasya like being a possessor or being herself? Possesser doesn't go that deep. It shows deeply the body horror, gauging the eyeballs out, continuously stabbing, and blood and lots of blood, until it makes you feel uneasy.

Andrea Riseborough is terrific as Tasya Vos, she has done an incredible job showing the complexity of the character. Christopher Abbott as Colin Tate is brilliant, there's no words for him to say how amazing he's, the dilemmas, the challenges he's to face is so beautifully portrayed by him. Others have also done a very good job, it's a well-acted movie overall. The cinematography by Karim Hussain is another finest thing in the movie, it's so beautifully shot, every scene, every shot is pitch-perfect and the production design, the lighting, the editing are also top-notch.

Possessor Uncut is beautifully strange and is very extreme and intense at every aspect and level, be it characters, the murders, the erotic scenes, nothing fails to impress. The film can be disturbing, unnerving, and has the power to shake you to the core with its blurry horrific imagery, that's why the Uncut has been used in the name, it not for everyone, and before watching it,  just be aware of what a strange world you're getting into, you'll either  get frustrated or you'll say it's a masterpiece!
