MonsterVerse has now a total of 4 movies and slowly it's reaching the position where it deserved. Who doesn't love a world full of Monsters, Godzilla-sized monsters? only when it is reel and not real.
In this post, I've ranked all the four monsterverse films from good to best. If you're not known of this newly formed universe, this post is for you. Stick to it and let's start our countdown.
04. Godzilla (2014).
No no, not 1998 Godzilla where the monster looked like a kind of dinosaur, T-Rex who was shown as a destructor and nothing more than that. But this 2014s Godzilla is so much more and good. In 1954, everyone, the soldiers and scientists tried to kill Godzilla with a nuclear bomb. After examining it in 1999, a skeleton of a monster is found along with two eggs, one is inactive while the other is already hatched with a track leading to the sea. The Janjira Nuclear Power Plant in Japan experiences a quake where the plant collapses. For 15 years, the power plant houses a huge pupa that has been feeding off the plant's reactor. From which an insect-like giant creature escapes and again a quake is felt which is publicly reported as an earthquake. But it is not. The insect-like creatures are called MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) and Godzilla fights with that monster because of an ancient rivalry. The film is visually breathtaking and directed by Gareth Edwards, Godzilla will shake you from inside. It has that kind of aura thanks to the strong and effective performance by Bryan Cranston who played Joe Brody, a former lead engineer at the Janjira nuclear plant. It also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ford Brody as US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Lieutenant and Elizabeth Olen as Elle, a nurse, and Ford's wife. The film also beautifully keeps Godzilla in a curtain and tries never to show him in a full picture. It keeps you intrigued yes, the battle between the MUTO and Godzilla is electric as expected. But the audiences complained about not giving enough space to Godzilla and other monsters. With a $160 million budget, it grossed over $525 million worldwide and was declared a massive hit. It has a rating of 6.4/10 on IMDb and 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
03. Godzilla: King of The Monsters (2019).
So after all the MUTOs, the media and in the news channels, Godzilla was titled, King of the Monsters. Now slowly the Titans are revealing themselves one by one that was hidden on the Earth and in front of our eyes. There is an organization called Monarch that studies these Titans and there's Dr. Emma Russell played by Vera Farmiga, who is studying a giant larva-like creature called Mothra. Dr. Mark Russell is assigned to track down Godzilla whereas Dr. Emma is kidnapped by Colonel Alan Jonah, an eco-terrorist who is intended to free the Monster Zero who is a three-headed monster. When Emma awakens Monster Zero in Antarctica, and Godzilla and Monster Zero which we later come to know as King Ghidorah battles. Emma then gradually awakens Rodan and other Titans who create destruction all around the world. Now it's up to Godzilla to stop King Ghidorah, alpha monster, and others. The 2014s Godzilla got criticized for Godzilla's screentime and so here the makers are in full form and delivered monster battle sequences like never seen before. The visuals are mind-blowing and the visual effects are stunning. Titans are shown as a lifesaver to mankind and not just a monster. Don't miss the post-credit scenes.
02. Kong: Skull Island (2017).
The story is set in 1973 when Monarch recruits a former soldier James Conrad, US Army lieutenant colonel Preston Packard and a photographer and a journalist, Mason Weaver, and many others to travel to the recently discovered island. Reaching there, the unit is attacked by a giant ape. They encounter Iwi natives living there and a man Marlow who tells them that the giant ape is Kong and he protects this island from outsiders and skullcrawlers who have killed all Kong's species. In the climax, the Kong and Skullcrawlers battle. At the last, it also shows Godzilla and King Ghidorah in a battle through cave paintings which we finally witness in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Watching this and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, you'll find it more interesting and you'll want to know more about these monsters and about their enemies and what they've lost. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences and grossed $566 million with a budget of $185 million. The film has a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb and 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.
01. Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021).
After defeating King Ghidorah, Godzilla has gone mad creating havoc everywhere. Godzilla destroys the Pensacola facility. Nathan Lind, a Monarch geologist, and Dr. Ilene, a Monarch anthropological linguist helps Kong to take them to Hollow Earth to extract the power to stop Godzilla. Released recently, Godzilla vs Kong is ruling the box office despite the ongoing pandemic. There is so much to like about the film. The scenes of the deaf girl Jia and Kong are so good they can even make you emotional. That was truly unexpected. There is little to see about human characters just like other MonsterVerse films, but Godzilla Vs. Kong is so fast-paced and shorter than the above, it doesn't dip not even for a second. The fight sequences between Godzilla and Kong are enthralling and exciting. The film is visually amazing. We get to know so much about Kong, the ancient rivalry between Godzilla and Kong. And the last battle between the Mechagodzilla and Godzilla and Kong, oh my goodness!!
I'm eagerly waiting for what Legendary and Warner Bros. has on its plate to offer next. Seeing how MonsterVerse is improving with every movie, it is also making people incline towards these monsters films, just see the box office collections and how Godzilla Vs. Kong shattered records amid pandemic.
