Netflix has an amazing collection of horror movies. I love watching horror movies, doesn't matter how bad it is, horror films for me are like therapy whether it is a B-horror or C-Horror, I don't care and today in this video I'm going to suggest to you some, or say 25-26 Netflix Original horror films in which some are absolute gems while many could be considered as a time pass watch.
26. Malevolent (2018).
Based on the 2011 novel Hush, Malevolent is a story about a sibling, Angela, and Jackson who runs a scam on clients who think that their houses are haunted. One day Mrs. Green calls them and requests them to come and stop the " screaming" of the girls. But Angela is disturbed as she encountered something unnatural in an earlier client's house and she denies doing it. But Jackson agrees because of the debt he owes and as expected, nothing goes according to plan. The performances are amazing, Florence Pugh and Ben Lloyd-Hughes shine, and if you like these slow paranormal encounter horror films, this is your pick. It has a low IMDb rating of 4.8 and 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.
25. The Silence (2019).
The Silence can be considered as the lite version of A Quiet Place and is based on the 2015 horror novel by Tim Lebbon. The film shows that the world has come to an end and is under attack by creatures who hunt by sound. The story focuses on the Andrews family and their survival. The film was bashed by the critics and Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka played a deaf teen and many deaf celebrities criticized not taking a deaf actor to play the role. The comparison to A Quiet Place also created discussion but is it watchable? Yes, it is... Despite now the creatures and the characters like this falls under the cliched zone but you can watch it once if you love these kinds of films. It's never boring, but the catch is who does it better.
24. In The Tall Grass (2019).
Based on the 2012 horror novella In The Tall Grass by Stephen King and Joe Hill, the film starts with introducing us to a 6 month pregnant Becky and his brother Cal who are traveling to San Diego and suddenly they hear someone calling out for help from the tall grass. They enter the field and get separated and gets panicked and decides to return to their car but they can't. After that what happens, you've to see that for yourself. The film was announced in 2015 only but the work didn't start and in 2018, Netflix purchased the film rights and completed the film with Vincenzo Natali as the director. The film has a rating of 5.4/10 on IMDb and 36% on Rotten Tomatoes and the film is a spectacle according to me. I enjoyed the film despite the film drags at some places, but you'll enjoy it too if love horror films especially those on Stephen King's stories.
23. The Babysitter (2017) and The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020).
The story is about Cole, an under-confident kid who is bullied by his neighbor and there's Bee who stands up for him and Cole thinks of her as more than a friend. She is his babysitter and when one night, Cole's parents go out and Bee invites some of his friends to Cole's house and Cole sees what he was not supposed to. The first part is great, though the film is not spooky, it is thoroughly entertaining. The second part was intriguing as Cole has to see that his girlfriend is also a part of the cult as well as the old members from the first part return too. The blood and violence keep you satisfied but that's not enough.
22. Ghost Stories (2020).
A Hindi horror anthology film of four short stories directed by four different directors, tells the story of a nurse taking care of a bedridden old lady, a pregnant woman mothering her late sister's child, a man arriving at a village and finds it empty except for a boy and girl who tells him that everyone has been eaten. Then a beautiful woman marries a wealthy man, everything seems to be perfect until he starts talking to his dead grandma. Audiences trashed the film and you would be feeling too why I've included this film but I really loved how the directors have created a chilling atmosphere and stands as a truly unique horror film considering the film's execution. The makers did try to do something out of the box but it feels like association of some particular person led to the downfall of Ghost Stories.
21. Eli (2019).
Eli Miller is a young boy experiencing an uncommon illness that makes him hypersensitive to the outside atmosphere. His mom and dad, Rose and Paul, takes him to Dr. Isabella Horn's separated clinical office, an enormous, old house that has been modernized and quarantined. He could live however he wants and he starts his treatment but something is not right. A girl Haley reveals that this house is haunted and all the patients have died here with the same treatment that he's going through. The 5.7/10 rating on IMDb and 48% on Rotten Tomatoes seems a little unfair as I think is a well-made horror film that keeps you on your toes all the time. The film is horrific and the climax is remarkable. I'm waiting for its next part if it releases.
20. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016).
Directed by Oz Perkins, who is known for directing and writing many gothic horrors, The Girl in the Photographs, The Blackcoat's Daughter and Gretel & Hansel, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House tells the story about a young nurse Lily taking care of a retired horror writer Iris who is suffering from dementia and lives in a hunted house. The film has a strong creepy atmosphere and keeps you intrigued but the slow pacing works against the film. The film was received well by the critics and praised the performances and direction and has a rating of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes.
19. Velvet Buzzsaw (2019).
An art critic Morf Vandewalt and Rhodora decide to exhibit the paintings of a dead painter in their gallery but then it is revealed that they are not any ordinary paintings and staffs of the gallery are dying of brutal death one by one. It received favorable reviews from the critics and has a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb and the film is not that consistent but at some point, it never fails to amaze with the horrific sequences it delivers that are so enthralling and impossible to overlook. If you're looking for something fascinating, this is it.
18. Before I Wake (2016).
Directed by Mike Flanagan, Before I Wake is about a 5-year-old boy Cody Morgan and a couple, Jessie and Mark after losing their son take him in as a foster child. But something is not right with Cody. He complains to Jessie about The Canker Man but she tells him it is not real, he can't harm him. The couple starts to feel that Cody has powers that when he falls asleep strange things happen, even they saw their dead son. The film received positive reviews from the critics where it got praised for the performances, the horror sequences, and the visuals but was criticized for its screenplay. I think the film was amazing, Jacob Tremblay as Cody was remarkable. He owns every frame he is in. The mystery behind Cody keeps you hooked. A perfect watch.
17. Little Evil (2017).
A horror comedy directed by Eli Craig is a story about a couple, Gary and Samantha and her 5 years old son Lucas who is possessed by an entity. After knowing that his stepson is possessed and it could be the reason why all previous boyfriends of Samantha are dead, what Gary will do in this situation? The film is a crazy riot and if love watching comedy horrors then this is totally worth your time.
16. The Ritual (2017).
The Ritual is a 2017 horror film based on the 2011 novel The Ritual by Adam Nevill. The film starts with showing five friends at a club making plans for the holiday, Rob tells that they should hike in Sweden. Then Rob gets killed by some thieves and in memory of him, the rest begin their hiking trip in Kungsleden, a hiking trail in North Sweden. They soon start to experience strange things as they see some symbols marked on the trees and from the next day, one by one starts to die. The film has a rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and the film is very effective in giving a chilling experience. The atmosphere has been created right, the sound design and the characters, everything is just perfect. Missing Wrong Turn, watch this.
15. 1922 (2017).
1922 is based on a short novel by Stephen King and is about a farmer Wilfred who manipulated his teenage son Henry into helping him to kill Arlette i.e. Henry's mother for his financial gain. Wilfred slits her throat and dumps her body in a dry well behind their barn and also makes a cow fall in that well for a cover. The film received rave reviews from the critics, John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter said that "film is not lurid in its scares, and instead depicts its protagonist's suffering mostly as a slow rot." It holds a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and if you're looking for something disturbing and unsettling, 1922 is your correct pick.
14. Cargo (2017).
Released in 2017, Cargo is a post-apocalyptic horror drama film based on the short film Cargo released in 2013 is a story about a father trying to keep her daughter safe in a world where people are turning into zombies in 48 hours after being infected. The film received positive reviews from the critics and love from the audiences too and the film feels like a breath of fresh air in the zombie apocalypse genre which has now nothing left to explore. Martin Freeman as Andy, the father gave a wonderful performance. This zombie movie will touch your heart and so be ready with tissues.
13. Ravenous (2017).
Set in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak, a bunch of people is trying to survive this apocalypse and the zombie-like which they've labeled them as 'hungry'. This French horror film is epic and brings freshness to the zombie horror genre. Though the pace is a bit slow it is truly unnerving and solid. The film has an excellent sound design and cinematography and the power to keep you hooked delivering tensions rather than giving jump scares and thrills. If you love watching slow burn zombie horror movies this is what you need to watch.
12. Veronica (2017).
The film opens with a gripping scene where a girl on a phone is telling the emergency services to come to their place and someone is coming to get his brother and the phone cuts off abruptly. Now three days earlier, it is revealed that Veronica tried to contact her dead father and obviously everything went wrong as she screams with a demonic voice and passes out. She wakes up thinking this was probably because of iron deficiency. And the condition worsens every day. A Spanish Horror film directed by Paco Plaza is inspired by a real event of 1991 where a girl died when she used the Ouija board. The film was even considered the scariest film on Netflix and that helped the movie to garner more popularity. The film works at many places, the chilling effect is there, the cinematography is terrific and the visuals are horrific but nothing fresh considering other films on Ouija but a strong horror movie. It has a rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
11. Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020).
Another horror-comedy about a group of teenage friends who have to protect their neighborhood when they saw vampires killing peoples and are taking shelters in one of the buildings in their neighborhood. Released last year in Halloween month, Vampire Vs the Bronx is supremely entertaining. The three boys will keep you engrossed fully in the movie with their charm and enjoyable chemistry. Whereas the horror aspect also works giving the chills when required but you'll laugh more. The film got favorable reviews from critics and has a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
10. The Perfection.
A psychological horror-thriller directed by Richard Shepard and starring Allison Williams and Logan Browning in important roles is about a young cellist Charlotte who befriends Lizzie and ends up making love in a hotel. The next day, Lizzie starts to feel ill and vomits out maggots and larva-like things in a bus and finally ends up chopping her hand where she saw insects crawling inside her skin. The film holds a rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.1 on IMDb. The performances from both the actresses are amazing, the film holds your attention every second. If you love psychological horror then this will be a treat to you.
09. Bird Box (2018).
Bird Box is based on the 2014 post-apocalyptic novel Bird Box by Josh Malerman and follows a woman, a mother who has to figure out how to direct herself and her kids to security notwithstanding the expected danger from an unseen enemy or creatures who makes people commit suicide. The film got mixed reviews from the critics as one of the critics from the NY Times called the film sometimes riveting but overall disappointing. But the film got a great response from the audiences and I too think it's an outstanding post-apocalyptic horror film that made a record considering viewership when Netflix revealed after six months of the release that the film has been watched over 89 million times over a month. A bird box challenge also created controversy where individuals had to carry out their regular work blindfolded which lead to accidents. A sequel to Bird Box has been announced by Netflix, lets see when and what next updates related to this film comes out.
08. Apostle (2018).
A 2018 period horror film directed by Gareth Evans, Apostle, set in the early 1900s, tells the story of a British man Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) who travels to a remote island to save his sister Jennifer who was kidnapped by a mysterious cult. The people claim that the island stays fertile because of the blood sacrifices they make but now they don't have anything to pay for buying animals for these rituals and hence they are bound to assassinate humans for that. Apostle has great performances, from Dan Stevens especially, and is a visual treat. It doesn't rely on cheap jump scares rather it tries to build an uneasy world of its own and grow on you slowly. This is a must-watch.
07. Annihilation (2018).
Based on the 2014 novel by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation is about a group of four women, a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a surveyor, who heads into a mysterious zone named Area X also called "shimmer". Inside that shimmer, the plants and animals are mutating and nothing is normal inside that area. With battling their own personal problems, the film never fails to amaze with its top-notch visual effects. There was a scene where the team was attacked by a giant mutated bear, it was so good and equally terrifying. And with the jaw-dropping climax, Annihilation is a complete treat. Though it was a box office flop but it gained popularity when it was released on Netflix. It has a rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
06. Bulbbul (2020).
A Hindi Horror Thriller Film directed by Anvita Dutt and starring Tripti Dimri, Avinash Tiwari and Rahul Bose, and Parambrata Chattopadhyay is a story about Bulbbul who was married to the Bodo Thakur when she was five years old. But she is close to Satya who is of her age and after 20 years when he returns from London, his brother Mahendra is killed by a chudail. Anvita Dutt's vision for the film is totally clear as to what she wants to show from this film. The film is pertinent to this current era despite the film is set in 1880 considering the various topics it tries to cover, and Tripti Dimri shines throughout the film. The film got critical acclaim and truly the film is mind-blowing. The changing of the hues, from red and then to blue, symbolizes several feelings of women. Though the climax was predictable and it could have been amazing if it was made into a series. Don't miss this.
05. #Alive (2020).
Joon-woo is distant from everyone else and lives in his family's flat when a baffling illness that causes those contaminated to attack and eat uninfected individuals breaks out in the news and around him. From his gallery, Joon-woo sees a frightened group escaping and being attacked. From here starts a battle to survive this outbreak when food and water finally start to run out and he has to get out of his apartment. The film has a rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and it also becomes the first Korean film to top the Netflix worldwide movie chart. It was ranking in the top 10 making it one of the most loved films globally on Netflix. This film utilizes its potential to the fullest and never falls under cliched tropes for zombie apocalypse films. That's what I loved about it. Horror fans, you'll love it, watch it if you haven't seen it.
04. Hush.
Kate Seigel who also co-wrote the film with Mike Flanagan plays a deaf and mute author Maddie who lives in a house deep in the woods, away from civilization to enhance her writing abilities, is tormented by a masked killer. He has killed her friend Sarah and now it is Maddie's turn. Directed by Mike Flanagan and made with a budget of a mere $1 million, Hush is undeniably one of the best thin plot films I've seen in years. The film is smart and keeps you on the edge of the seat. Even Stephen King was impressed with the film and compared the film with Halloween and Wait Until Dark. With 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, Hush is one of the best horror slasher films you'll find on Netflix.
03. His House (2020).
A Horror Thriller film, His House is about a couple, Bol and Rial who run away with their daughter from Sudan which was a war zone, ends up in London where the government gives them a house to stay. They both start to experience strange happenings and Rial understands that this house is haunted by a night witch. The film is a visual delight with solid horror and a mind-blowing story and a jaw dropping climax. The actors did an amazing job and the film got critical acclaim and holds a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Wow!!
02. Cam (2018).
Starring Madeline Brewer and directed by Daniel Goldhaber, Cam tells the story of Alice Ackerman who fills in as a camgirl on a site called FreeGirlsLive, broadcasting explicitly erotic live shows from a studio she has set up in her home under the name "Lola_Lola." She is serious about her position on the site, expecting to be number 1, a spot right now held by a camgirl named BabyGirl. But there's a strange twist that comes in the second half of the film. Madeline Brewer is outstanding in the role of Alice and the film is engrossing from the start and mind-blowing in the second half and has a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
01. Gerald's Game (2017).
Based on the Stephen Kings 1992 novel, Gerald's Game directed by Mike Flanagan tells the story about a woman whose husband dies of a heart attack while she's handcuffed to the bed, and what happens after this is the inner voices start to dominate her and has to face some real evil and darkness she couldn't have imagined. Mike once in an interview told that how the story has been written it's impossible to make a feature film out of it, but he did it and the film got critical acclaim and stands at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on IMDb. This film is truly a nightmare and equally incredible, this is considered Carla Gugino's one of the best performances in her career. You need to experience yourself, as whatever I said earlier about the film's plot happens in the first 10 minutes, after that it is outstanding.
