Soorarai Pottru is an Indian Tamil drama film directed by Sudha Kongara. The film stars Suriya, Paresh Rawal, Aparna Balamurali, Urvashi, Mohan Babu, and Karunas in the key roles. The film was released on 12th November 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
The story revolves around the hero Nedumaaran Rajangam, aka Maara (Suriya), after adding his village Sholavandan as the main station, so that every train could stop benefiting the villagers, now Maara has a vision of doing something more, he wants to start his airline which could be easily available to everyone at affordable prices. But his journey is not going to be easy, the founder of Jaz Airlines Paresh Goswami (Paresh Rawal) is simply not in the mood of letting anyone come into the path of his business and Maara has to encounter many dark sides of this rotten system. So will he be able to start his own airline, this is what the whole film is about.
The story is by Sudha Kongara, with a screenplay by Shalini Usha Nair, Sudha Kongara, and an additional screenplay by Aalif Surti and Ganeshaa. Well the story is very exciting and shows the journey of Maara (Suriya) with integrity and absolute honesty. The characters are the soul of the film as they are amazingly written and put out on the screen, especially the two lead characters Maara and Bommi, who are career-driven and focused, and their crackling chemistry is one of the finest things to witness. Maara falls for Bommi when she says she wants to start her Bakery shop, and Maara says Yes instantly to the marriage proposal. Sundari is quite a solid character, who stands for herself, is determined and focussed, and also supports and finance her husband's dream, their marriage is made on the ground of respect, that's where it wins showcasing a beautiful love story.
The spellbinding journey of Maara, a nobody, an underdog, who got into the Indian Air Force, and pictured to make his own airline, available for the poor and the one who can not afford to travel in luxurious airplanes, is the core of the story, which is equally powerful and inspiring. The film follows the nonlinear track and jumps from past to present fluently, without distorting the concentration of the audience, who will get emotionally invested with these two inspiring leads in no time. The most hateful character, Paresh Goswami, is also impactful who unabashedly demotivates and not supports any of his competitors and sees them as a threat, and unapologetically and shamelessly playing all the dirty games, defaming and slandering Maara's image, is enough to understand what he can do, and what evil he's!
It frequently offers many emotional scenes, like when Maara's father is unwell at his village, and he doesn't have enough money to buy the plane ticket and reaching there's he sees that he has lost his father, and his scene with his mother Pechi (Urvashi) is just brilliant and hard-hitting at the same time, you'll be sobbing The scenes is just perfect with no background score. There are many scenes that hit you hard and are touching.
Suriya as Nedumaaran Rajangam, has reached a level of Nirvana with the way he portrayed the character, he's fantastic, and brought the depth and realism of Maara which helps you to get connected to him. Aparna Balamurali as Bommi, is one of the best female characters I've come across in any film. She is solid, determined, and confident and her scenes with Suriya are charming. Paresh Rawal plays the evil businessman Paresh Goswami, and the results are terrific, you'll literally hate him for what he's and the way he's suppressing the poor. Paresh Rawal, known for doing comic roles, has played the wicked and villainous character amazingly.
The cinematography is by Niketh Bommireddy and its wonderful, stunningly captured scenes evoke right emotions, supported by perfect background music which is impactful. So all in all, Soorarai Pottru directed by Sudha Kongara is an incredible film, depicting the breathtaking journey of Nedumaaran Rajangam, humanely. Inspired by the life of G.R. Gopinath, it perfectly balances the narration of Maara's life, showing his love life and his venture to become the owner of his dream Airline. I hope that Bollywood wouldn't think of remaking this masterpiece. It's a must-watch
