We Can Be Heroes - Review : Childish, Silly but still enjoyable and is Optimistic!!!

We Can Be Heroes - Review

We Can Be Heroes is an American superhero film directed by Robert Rodriguez. It stars Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra, YaYa Gosselin, Nathan Blair, Lyon Daniels, Andy Walken, Hala Finley, Dylan Henry Lau, Andrew Diaz, Isaiah Russell Bailey, Akira Akbar, Lotus Blossom, and Vivien Blair in main roles. It was released on 25th December 2020 on Netflix.

Marcus Moreno (Pedro Pascal) is retired from the Heroics team but works there and the news is breaking all over the news channel that the Earth is being invaded by the aliens. Marcus takes her daughter Missy Moreno (YaYa Gosselin) to the headquarters of the Heroics and there she met Ms. Granada, the boss (Priyanka Chopra) who takes her to the bunker where other Heroics superhero children are kept and tells them not to come out of this bunker.

There Missy meets the other children who have superpowers, Noodles (Lyon Daniels) who can stretch like Rubber Man, Wild Card (Nathan Blair) who can use any power he wants, Rewind (Isaiah Russell Bailey), and Fast forward (Akira Akbar) who can alter time, Ojo (Hala Finley) who doesn't talk but can show future through her drawings, Guppy (Vivien Blair) who can use water as her weapon and has a strength of a shark, Slo-Mo (Dylan Henry Lau) who is very speed like a Flash but is stuck in a time warp and is slow, A Capella (Lotus Blossom) who can move things with her singing, Facemaker (Andrew Diaz) who can change his face, and Wheel (Andy Walken) who legs are so strong and heavy that he needs to sit on a wheelchair.

Ms. Granada sends all superheroes including Marcus to fight the aliens but are defeated and captured. Now the headquarters are in lockdown. The children are attacked by an alien but they all managed to escape from the vault and also from the headquarter. Now it's all up to them to use their superpowers to save the Earth from alien invasion and their superhero parents.

This film is written by Robert Rodriguez and serves as the direct sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. It will be wrong to judge this film as I did for Soul as this film is for kids and can be enjoyed as a family movie. If you have seen an earlier Spy Kids movie then you would know how these films are. Handling alien invasion is not new and this film also did nothing new in delivering that.

This film looks like any other Nickelodeon film and is filled with humor and twist and turns which would be a treat for children but can be lame if you look at it with a grown-ups' eye. Robert, known for directing Alita Battle Angel here tries to build a world full of superheroes, in fact just like Avengers, but for kids and offers plenty of enjoyable moments and a great message which is important for both children and adults.

The younger generations can also be trusted to solve things their parents left them. This solid and effective message pops up after the friendly climax of this film which really impressed me after all that ill execution of action sequences that will make you laugh hard. But it kept me invested somehow in its unreal colorful world and the appearance of Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra, and Oscar-nominated Mexican actress Adriana Barraza lifts the movie from being dull.

Pedro Pascal is just fine and Priyanka Chopra looks ravishing and did a good job as Ms. Granada. YaYa Gosselin as Missy is the one supporting the movie with her strong and optimistic aura which is enough to make you sit through this movie. Adriana Barraza in the special appearance is truly amazing and outshines everyone whenever she's on-screen.

The cinematography by Robert Rodriguez is good in some parts but very much ordinary in most of the parts. The production design, art direction, costume design, visual effects, everything is in good form and better than other Spy Kids movies.

We Can Be Heroes can be funny, silly if you see how loose is the execution. But you can't deny the fact that it is better than its earlier parts if you see the visual effects, the performances and all. You can't expect something outstanding from these movies but it really stunned me with its solid message it conveys at the climax. It's positive, optimistic, upbeat and even it has numerous drawbacks, still it is very much hard to dislike it.

Rating:- 2.5/5
