Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is an Indian Comedy Web Series directed by Debbie Rao, Ishaan Nair, and Abi Varghese. It stars Swara Bhaskar, Varun Thakur, Ravi Patel, Dolly Singh, Mona Ambegaonkar, and Girish Kulkarni in main roles. It has a total of 6 episodes and was released on 4th December 2020 on Netflix.
The story here is absolutely straightforward and not new. As soon as the marriage is set, a girl realizes that she can do everything else in the world except marriage. This is what Beanie (Swara Bhaskar) realizes when she decides to leave the boy after dating for three years at their marriage. Begins from here, the story of Beanie's hobby of doing stand-ups and to make it a profession.
On the cinema screen decades ago, hero-heroines used to run away from home to get married. But in recent movies of Hindi entertainment world, for the past many years, the young hero-heroine is leaving their wedding to become something in their life on their own. This formulaic idea works every time. Beanie Bhatnagar (Swara Bhaskar), who is going to be 30 years old, has also run away for the same reasons.
She has parents, a job, a bank balance, and also a rich lover. It is a matter of course, Beanie runs away from her wedding ceremony a little before her wedding. The reason, she wants to become a standup comedian. She also feels that her parents (Mona Ambegaonkar and Girish Kulkarni) and her lover aka future husband Arun (Varun Thakur) do not understand her. They are old fashioned. They want to see her become a mother just by imprisoning her in the gleaming walls. If this happens, Beanie's life will change into a tragedy.
Ravi Patel and Neel Shah have written the show. This web series of six episodes do not bore despite following the same old path of romance-drama-comedy. Stand up comedy is a new craze and career choice in the youth of metros. This web series is like a recipe but not a proper guide for becoming a stand-up comedian. If you want to make a career in it then definitely see it, yes it is presented in a sugar-coated way, but at least it's enjoyable.
If your children are of the new generation and you are of the old generation, then this series works as a friendly therapist. It says that the people of the past generations have always less wisdom to understand the new generation. With the changing times, people become old and their children's life choices are beyond their comprehension. While understanding the next generation becomes the duty of the older generation.
Whatever happens in real life, despite everything being scattered initially, it finally falls back. The life of Bhagaudi Beanie Bhatnagar also gets set in the last. All the people she leaves and runs away from, finally come to her.
In the beginning, the series moves slowly. It continues to wander along with the wanderings of Beanie's life but eventually returns to the track. When writers and directors start this series, it seems that they are under the tremendous influence of English comedy films and sitcoms. The way that the actors say their dialogues just seems very unnatural and un-Indian. This situation remains for about half of the way. When it seems that the Indian audience does not seem to be able to digest the strong English touch, then the world of Beanie's changes sides, and from story-dialogue to acting, everything now matches with the true Bollywood style.
Despite not having any special, new, or unique thing, the character of Beanie has been sharpened well. Swara Bhaskar has played it wonderfully. Here her acting and facial expressions are different from her earlier films and web series. In this sense, freshness is seen in her face and her body language. Ravi Patel's track in the role of American-Indian is interesting, while Girish Kulkarni leaves the glow of acting here as always. Mona Ambegaonkar as Beanie's mother also impresses. Varun Thakur as Arun and Dolly Singh as Kapi have also lent good support.
The cinematography by Mridul Sen is terrific. The series shows looks absolutely stunning and colorful and the credit also goes to the production designer Sarada Ramaseshan as the sets look pretty and vibrant. The music is also good and suits the coolness of the show.
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is a good, light-hearted show. It is made with a good heart which is evident in every frame. The world of stand up is more or less new to the Indian audience. Its comedy is close to life, in which people can see their image. Writers of the entertainment world can bring new stories that connect audiences with this world and it will be not wrong to say that part of it is apparent in this show. But what I have to admit is very few jokes have the power to make you laugh, otherwise it's just dull. Stream it for Swara Bhaskar, it's sparkling and vibrant nature which will not make you feel bore.
