Bloody Hell is a comedy horror-thriller film directed by Alister Grierson. It stars Ben O'Toole, Meg Fraser, Caroline Craig, Matthew Sunderland, Travis Jeffrey, Jack Finsterer, and Joshua Brennan in main roles. It was released on 14th January 2021 on VOD.
After living in jail for 8 years, Rex (Ben O'Toole) is still a hero in the outside world as he killed all the bank robbers in a bank hiest but mistakenly kills a bank staff too. Well, he was a criminal in front of the court and was sentenced to jail for 8 years. So, now coming out, he is thinking of going on a vacation and selects Finland for the trip. At the Helsinki Airport, he's kidnapped and when he wakes up, he finds himself hanging from his wrists in a basement with his right leg missing.
The host family has a mother (Caroline Craig) and a father (Matthew Sunderland), their three boys, Gideon (Travis Jeffrey), Pete (Joshua Brennan), and Olli (David Hill), and a daughter Alia (Meg Fraser). Alia has tried several times to run away from her family with her younger brother Olli but every time she fails and is being held locked up in a cage in her home by her parents. She dresses up the wound of Rex and gets close to him and she begs him to kill her family and save her. Now the question remains, why Rex is tied up in a basement, why his right leg is missing, and why Alia begs Rex to kill her family?
Written by Robert Benjamin, this is one of the most enjoyable and exciting films with a mixture of high powered and energetic action sequences with an inhuman family of murderers. It will remind you of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and recently released Butchers, still, Robert's story has a novelty that makes this one stands different. The strength of the film is undeniably the central character, Rex. He's given a double role one is the real Rex who is confused and scared, other is his subconscious or his reflex who helps him to get out of the situation and is constantly pushing him.
He develops his habit of talking to himself when he was in prison as Rex says in one scene. The film often delivers his state of mind with flashbacks of the bank heist when he killed all the robbers before being fully shown at the climax what really happened that lead him to what he is now. This is not a pure horror but comes with a touch of humor with a scene showing Alia and Rex dancing in a dreamy beautiful frame and one with Rex with his right leg.
Bloody Hell delivered an absolutely exceptional finale. I wanted to scream in joy and clap when Rex comes out of the table. Despite some of its inspired ideas from 70s slasher flicks, this film is fun and highly entertaining. The film wins in the department of character development, the dialogues, the violence, and gore. I'm not going to discuss anything more or I will have to put a 'spoiler alert' warning at the top.
Ben O'Toole as Rex is brilliant. Being a horror film where most times the characters are ignored from making them believable, Bloody Hell presented its central character Rex so beautifully, his ego and his real form, side by side, both interacting, provides a lot of fun. Meg Fraser as Alia has looked beautiful and has done a fine job. Caroline Craig as mother, Matthew Sunderland as the father, Travis Jeffrey as Gideon and Joshua Brennan as Pete, and others have lent good support, but they have not got sufficient screentime to make their presence felt.
The cinematography by Brad Shield is not good though. The film looks dull like a B-movie, the bluish tint was a bad touch. The production design by Michael Rumpf is average and the music by Brian Cachia is impressive. It fits the tone of the film, it is loud and jumping. The editing by Robert Benjamin and Alister Grierson is crisp and it couldn't have been better.
Bloody Hell is a superb film that despite its cliched storyline and silliness, is highly entertaining. Ben O'Toole is in a terrific form and the mashup of high octane action with the inhumane murderers works here really well. If you're a horror movie addict, don't miss this. This edge of seat Horror Thriller is a must-watch.
