Hubie Halloween - Review : An Average Laughter Riot!!!

Hubie Halloween - Review

Hubie Halloween
is an American Horror Comedy movie directed by Steven Brill and written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy. It stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Steve Buscemi, June Squibb, Karan Brar, Noah Schnapp, and Paris Berelc in the main roles. Hubie Halloween was released on October 7th, 2020 on Netflix.

The story is set in Salem, and all the people are set to celebrate Halloween. Hubie Dubois, played by Adam Sandler is a person of interest to everyone in the town, he gets always bullied and mocked by the children and adults alike because they think that he's an idiot and childish. But he has a good heart and he's ready to help every time for the people in need. He has a family tradition of doing duty on Halloween night, to make sure people are safe. A dangerous patient escapes from the mental asylum and now he's free to roam on the roads of Salem openly when everyone is celebrating Halloween. He is also as ascertain about his neighbor being a werewolf. So will he be able to save the people of Salem from what's lurking on the dark streets of Salem? Watch the movie then.

The story and screenplay have been written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy. It's a light-hearted Halloween movie, so don't expect it to be top-notch at the script level. The story is very routine but it's the screenplay that delivers fun. It has plenty of enjoyable moments, some scenes are genuinely funny, it's so hilarious sometimes, you won't be able to control your laughter. Adam Sandler as Hubie has outdone himself this time, his weird accent is so perfect, it's never over the top or bottom, it's perfect and never annoying. Some of his scenes are extremely funny when people are throwing things at him and he says that over the years he has mastered himself in protecting himself. The second hero of the film is Hubie's Thermos undeniably, he plays an important role in protecting Hubie all the time.

This is a story of bullying that pretends to be a Halloween movie and the writers should have shown one or two emotional moments of Hubie, because you never feel bad when he's bullied by others, in fact, you laugh. If the makers have tried to deliver laugh from the bully scenes, then it works, if otherwise, then of course not. Julie Bowen as Violet Valentine, Hubie's love interest, is good and others have also done a fine job.

The Cinematography by Seamus Tierney is good, the movie looks colorful and eye-filling. Art Design by Jim Wallis is commendable. The Salem town looks beautiful.

Director Steven Brill has managed to deliver hilarious moments and plenty of laughs in this Halloween movie but falls flat in terms of emotion. It's a sweet, light-hearted, slapstick comedy movie which if you watch then don't use your brain. Too many characters become a mess. I wanted to see more from Noah Schnapp (Will Byers from Stranger Things), he's wasted here and has nothing to do solid. It slightly falls short of emotions, hence it's underwhelming. You can enjoy this film with your parents and friends and might like it more than I did.

 Rating:- 2.5/5
