Psycho Goreman is a science-fiction horror comedy film directed by Steven Kostanski. It stars Nita-Josee Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber and was released on 22nd January 2021 on Video On Demand.
The story is about a sibling Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) who are shown playing 'crazy ball' and the one who'll lose has to dig a hole. Luke loses and while digging they found a glowing gem in the hole but it's 9:00 and it's time for bed. That night a monster comes out of that hole and kills three thieves hiding at the shoe factory. The next morning, Luke and Mimi follow the track to the shoe factory and there they find the brutally torn dead bodies and the monster. The monster tries to kill them but seeing the glowing gem he stops and says 'the one who yields the stone can make him do anything they want'.
The name of the gem he says is The Gem of Praxidice and his name is Archduke of Nightmares. He was sort of a ruler who tried to destroy the galaxy but was held on Earth as punishment. But little Mimi is not at all interested in his story and names him Psycho Goreman or PG in short and commands him to lift and spin Luke. Whereas the "Planetary Alliance" soon finds out that PG has escaped and they now have to come up with a plan to stop him from doing destruction. PG is stuck with the energetic and fun Mimi and Luke where he's playing crazy ball and watching TV but always threatens Mimi that when he will get that stone he'll rip their hearts out.
Steven Kostanski has written a story that doesn't want to be more than just entertaining. It is made that you could have a good time with your family and friends. The world-building is worth seeing here which often PG tells while remembering those days when he used to slaughter everyone and destroy planets. The funny thing about the movie is the characters, especially Mimi, a naive, stubborn girl, who doesn't even know who PG actually is neither she's interested in his stories.
The film perfectly maintains a friendly light tone with some slashers here and there. The creature designs will remind you of your childhood days when we used to watch Power Rangers, it's overdressed loud villains. The setting is of the 90s, and the intergalactic wars and the action scenes will remind you of that era convincingly. The gore and bloodshed are kept at a limit which provides a laugh rather than making you feel scared. The film is a total laugh riot.
Here it's not like PGs bond with Mimi will provide some heartwarming moments rather it gives many cracking scenes to enjoy. The film is very simple and that's where it wins. It doesn't try to complicated things. The conflict between the couple Greg (Adam Brooks) and Susan (Alexis Hancey) appears half baked and forced in the climax part. Despite that, it's a film that entertains you fully and doesn't intend to offer anything more than that.
Nita-Josee Hanna is the star here. Though her loud and irritating character may irritate many, but undoubtedly she's the scene-stealer here, with the confident performance, she leaves her mark. Owen Myre as Luke is natural as the quiet and shy boy and Robert Homer as Vince, the zombie police will make you laugh hard with the scenes in which he's constantly firing. Scout Flint as Alastair has lent good support and Adam Brooks and Alexis Hancey are okay as father and mother. Matthew Ninaber as PG has done a fine job.
The cinematography by Andrew Appelle is good and the production design by Alexandra Pozdeeva is worth mentioning. The sequence of intergalactic battle fits the 90s era. The music by Blitz//Berlin suits the film's tone and the editing by Andrew Appelle and Steven Kostanski is appropriate.
| Psycho Goreman cannot be considered as a PG movie like its name for it's over the top brutal bloodsheds and gore. Though it tries to maintain a friendly tone throughout and delivers many hilarious scenes. It's a simple straightforward film that only wants to give you a good time and nothing more. It succeeds in that fully, by engulfing by in its cartoonish 90s world threatened by PG, an overlord, but that's the most fascinating thing out the film. You will crave to know what happens next after credit rolls in the end and I don't think there will be a sequel, who knows!! |
