Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is an Indian Hindi Thriller Black Comedy film directed by Dibakar Banerjee. It stars Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles along with Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghubir Yadav, and Neena Gupta and was released in theaters on 19th March 2021.
Sandeep Walia/ Sandy (Parineeti Chopra) works in Parivartan Bank on a high post and runs a strategy to find depositors for the bank. She gets pregnant with her boss's baby. One night in a pub, Satinder Dahiya aka Pinky (Arjun Kapoor) arrives to pick up Sandy but something happens on the way and they are forced to flee. Tyagi (Jaideep Ahlawat) is tasked to kill Sandy and Pinky by the boss. But why?
Dibakar Banerjee and Varun Grover have written the film and let me tell you, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is not like a mainstream movie. With an experimental treatment with the narrative, which you might find sluggish at some points, which it is, shows the two faces of India amazingly with the two main characters. The film builds up the curiosity in you with a riveting opening sequence but slowly you find this film starts to struggle to keep you invested.
The story is quite good and very well written but the screenplay could have been more exciting and thrilling. Showing the patriarchal community and different classes of people with a touch of dark humor was a great choice but you need to understand it doesn't stand for patriarchy. We don't really know much of the characters but whatever we see on the screen, at least that appears very nuanced and detailed.
As the story progresses, we get to know much about them, their mistakes, and everything, and the two hate each other but eventually Pinky helps Sandeep in an emergency. The pacing is slow and so it grows in you slowly, watching the characters transforming to what they were and what they are now. Despite its slow pace, it keeps you hooked somehow with showing bank scams, and what happens in Pithoragarh when the old couple comes in the picture.
This is the kind of performance that was missing in Parineeti's last couple of films. She's brilliant and quite surprising as it was unbelievable at some point that it's Parineeti. She's earnest and refreshing like she was in Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl. Here Arjun Kapoor also impresses with his serious act playing a Haryanvi cop Pinky. He doesn't smile nor responds with expressions to anything and that's why he seems to be the smart choice for Pinky. Raghubir Yadav and Neena Gupta are an absolute delight to watch, their quarrels and interactions evoke humor and entertain you just like they were in Panchayat.
The cinematography by Anil Mehta is also breathtaking. From the first frame, it is evident that the camera work is going to be worth seeing. The locales of Uttarakhand have been beautifully captured. The background score by Dibakar Banerjee fits the tone of the film, it's ominous and beautiful and the songs by Anu Malik are forgettable. The editing by Bakul Baljeet Matiyani and Paramita Ghosh could have been sharper. At least 15 minutes could have been edited.
Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is not your usual film. This kind of narration is hardly seen in mainstream cinemas and maybe that's why many are hating this film as they are not used to this. With Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Love Sex Aur Dhokha and Shanghai, Dibakar Banerjee has marked himself as a filmmaker who dares to experiment with every film and also gives you the unsettling feeling even with the humor. The only weakest link is the slow pace, other than that it's not that bad. Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra are a surprise again after Ishaqzaade bringing their magic once again to the big screen. But it is hard to digest the low IMDb rating - this shows Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is not everyone's cup of tea.
Rating:- 3/5
