Dev DD 2 is an Indian Hindi Romantic Comedy Drama web series directed by Samar Iqbal and Harsh Dedhia. It stars Aasheema Vardaan, Sanjay Suri, Aman Uppal, Deepika Amin, Suneel Sinha, Rashmi Agdekar, Rumana Mola, and Nauheed Contractor in main roles. It has a total of 17 episodes and was released on 20th February 2021 on ALT Balaji and Zee5.
The story starts from where it ended in season 1, where Chandini (Rashmi Agdekar) finally gets to know that her best friend Devika Dwivedi (Aasheema Vardaan) is the one her father, Anurag (Sanjay Suri), loves. Shocked Chandini says her to leave while Anurag also doesn't want this relationship too, as she is a friend of her daughter and to be in this relationship will complicate things much more. Heartbroken Devika returns to her hometown Jaipur and everything in her changes. A rebellious and stormy Devika has now become calm and quiet. But it is just a matter of time when she meets her school senior friend Paritosh (Aman Uppal) and starts to spend time with him though she is not over Anurag fully. Whilst we see Anurag and journalist Aditi (Nauheed Contractor) are trying to collect evidence against female fortitude and illegal abortion ongoing in a hospital.
The story, screenplay, and dialogues are by Nikhil Vyas, Kamayani Vyas and Sumrit Shahi. In its earlier season, we got to see what a troublemaker Devika is. The full inside out of Devika is clear from season one, and now you will witness more of her. She is firm, tough, heterodox, revolutionary and so much more. But this time, she appears as a savior for others. Her romantic track with Anurag and Paritosh are there, you'll feel that Chandini's and Radha's track is more dominating here.
The writers seem to be more daring, apart from the main lead who is always ready to go against the stereotypical thoughts of society, Chandini and Radha are also struggling to get accepted. The villain is Chandini's mother who even brings in priests to clear off the lesbian demon from her head. What was beautiful here was to see Devika and her parents, Kanta (Deepika Amin) and Dharma (Suneel Sinha) standing for them, supporting and understanding them. In the middle portion, the show becomes like a Housefull franchise, where every lead character comes together for the marriage of the couple.
Some portions feel redundant, like bringing the LGBTQIA people to empty the house of Chandini. It could have been done by the main cast, no solid reason to bring Andy here. The scenes of Anurag and Aditi collecting proofs were not engaging, though it was a big thing it lacks thrill and rush. Despite this new season is long, nearly 5.5 hours, it is entertaining and has an ample amount of light moments and some genuinely hilarious moments, like when Devika invites all aunties to her party and whatever happens next is riotous.
Aasheema Vardaan is like fire here. Her performance has grown from the first season and is remarkable throughout. Though the story delivers nothing fresh, it's Aasheema's portrayal of Devika that keeps you glued to the show. Sanjay Suri is very good, his cool and restrained performance leaves a mark here. Rashmi Agdekar as Chandini and Rumana Mola as Radha nailed her parts. Deepika Amin as Devika's mother brings realism and Suneel Sinha as Devika's father, Aman Uppal as Paritosh, and Nauheed Contractor as Aditi are also good.
The cinematography by Lawrence Alex Dcunha, Shreya Gupta, and Anil Katke is reasonably good. The show has a fresh look overall, looks even bigger and better than season one. The production design by Priyanka Grover is appropriate. The background music and themes by Ripul Sharma are cool and suit the tone of the show. The editing by Vikas Sharma, Vishal Sharma, Geeta Singh, and Rocchak Ahuja is crisp and perfect.
Dev DD 2 is even better than its earlier season. Devika is still the rebel and troublemaker, as in one scene when she says that she is going for an interview for a job and to wish her luck, her father replies that she doesn't need luck, the ones who will be hiring her need luck. It is clear that the show is daring and raises its voice against female foeticide and gender determination tests and supports not only homosexuals but also those who dare to go against all odds and stand different from the orthodox mindset of the society. There is a lot of grave topics it tries to show inside this Devdas pattern story, nevertheless, it is entertaining and fun and one could have easily predicted the last twist. So stream it, feeling broken - Devika is here to cheer you up.
