The Innocent is based on the 2005 mystery thriller novel The Innocent by Harlan Coben. He signed a five-year deal with Netflix and 14 of his books will be developed into series and movies. Three including The Innocent has been released, the first was The Stranger where a lady in her 20s approaches a family man Adam and discloses to him that his wife has faked her pregnancy. Furthermore, the second was The Woods which is a murder mystery set in 2019 however by one way or another the homicide is connected to what exactly occurred in 1994.
The third one, The Innocent recounts the tale of Mateo Vidal (Mario Casas) who is a young fellow getting a charge out of the night at the homecoming party. However, abruptly a battle begins, all are drunk, the young men are not in their minds, and Mateo unintentionally kills another man Dani. Mateo is sent to prison for four years for this crime and coming out from prison he attempts to fix his life by working in his brother's office, a legal firm. In a club, he meets Olivia (Aura Garrido) and after nine years, when everything is working out in a good way in Mateo's life, he again meets Olivia.
Yet, this time he weds her. They are buying a new house and are expecting their first child. Olivia gets a call and needs to hurry to Berlin. Mateo gets a video message sent by her wife's mobile number showing Olivia resting bare in lodging and the one who recorded this video likewise shows his face in the mirror. Mateo begins to speculate that his better half is taking part in an extramarital affair and he attempts to discover more about this. At the same time, a criminal investigator Lorena Ortiz (Alexandra Jiménez) is investigating a nun's homicide which is looking like more of suicide however after delving into the case and realizing that the nun (Juana Acosta), after the autopsy, is no common sister as she had various tattoos on her body and this all leads the detective to a strip club where may this nun used to work before she turns into a nun.
In the interim, Mateo is attempting to discover who that man is, with investigator Zoe (Anna Alarcón) and two speculative people Saez (Xavi Sáez) and Gallardo (Santi Pons) are after Olivia. However, why? Who's that nun? Did she truly end it all or she was murdered? What is the connection between this nun and Olivia? I will try to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible. Also, I'll keep it short. It's just about two weeks since The Innocent was released and I was nearly avoiding this gem of Netflix. Director Oriol Paulo alongside his co-writers Jordi Vallejo and Guillem Clua have so wonderfully adapted the novel of Coben's, and it's so extraordinary and enthralling to see this series.
I'm not a book person so I'm not familiar with the first material but if I say that this TV Adaptation works better compared to the novel, will it not be right to say this? You tell me. The writing is so strong and the characters are so wonderfully detailed and their intentions, their sufferings, their torment and despondency, and every minute emotion is so strong and heavy. You feel for those characters. I was stunned really to perceive how every character and their sentiments are taken care of so delicately. Particularly of Mateo and Sonia (Ana Wagener), it's the most remarkable track. The twists and turns are jaw-dropping and many come at normal spans with similar power to punch you.
The performances are credible, everybody shines and each character has been given an acceptable space in the series to leave an effect. The Innocent is an incredibly written and acted series with a lot of compelling twists and turns to keep you hooked regardless of whether a few episodes run longer than an hour. It's very easy to sit and that is a big plus point for The Innocent. The kind of narrative it has, it's remarkable and invigorating. Each episode starts with acquainting us with various characters telling about their past, their lies, their facts, and their secrets. The proverb - "Little drops make the mighty ocean" goes perfectly with this show. It's a very well-made, engaging, and convincing thriller series that you shouldn't miss and skip at any cost.
