His House is a horror-thriller film written and directed by Remi Weekes and a story written by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables. It stars Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu, and Matt Smith in the lead roles. The film was released on October 30th, 2020 on Netflix.
Due to the war situation in South Sudan, most of the people have to leave their place and move to other countries but many people die on the way due to the bad weather and sea storms. Those who survived lived in an asylum for some time, among them was a couple, Bol ( Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku). They're given a chance to start a new life and are sent to London, but there are certain conditions. Mark (Matt Smith) is working for a company that helps the African couple to settle in a house. The house is very big for them to imagine. But something is hiding in those walls of the house. They start to see things, the spirit of their daughter who died in the sea storm and a beastly creature. What do those evil creatures want from them? For that, you'll have to watch the film.
The story has been written by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables, which is quite unusual and raw. The screenplay by Remi Weekes is quite unique and interesting. From the start, the mood of the film is very tensed and hence you'll want to find out how the scenes unfold and how the characters progress. Both are refugees from Africa and hence they are not very well greeted by the neighbors. They are mocked and Rial gets bullied by the kids to go back to Africa. Bol is very fond of his new house at the start until the house starts to torments them. The setup of the house is creepy and some scenes will remind you of Lights Out. They both are trying to adapt themselves, like speaking English, having food with forks and knives. This film is not a haunted house story, but it shows the characters suffering and reliving their pain once more. Their loved ones were butchered and their girl died in the sea storm, the house makes them to live those memories once again. But why? The film gives you the answer with horror elements all over it and that's all the film wants to show.
Sope Dirisu as Bol is convincing and believable. It was not an easy task to put a complex character on the screen but he did it effectively. The way he tries to adapt and blend in with the new society is amazingly portrayed by him. Wunmi Mosaku as Rial is very calm and relaxed and but the strain is very much visible in her face. Matt Smith has nothing much to do but has done a fine job. The cinematography by Jo Willems is good and captures the eerie vibes and ghost encounters quite effectively supported by the striking visual effects that really takes the film on another level. The background music is great and elevates the horror quotient at every frame.
His House is not your typical haunted house horror movie and offer many scenes that may confuse you sometimes. This film is not for everyone as the pace is very slow and surely will test your patience but has a novel approach towards the horror genre. With a good story and effective performance from the leads, this is surely a one time watch, it doesn't offer very much strong horror but will get you one or two times with some jump scares.
