The Mortuary Collection is an American horror anthology film written and directed by Ryan Spindell. It was released on 15th October 2020, on Shudder. It stars Clancy Brown, Caitlin Cluster, Christine Kilmer, Jacob Elordi, Barak Hardley, Sarah Hay, and Mike C. Nelson in the main roles.
Montgomery Dark, a creepy looking old man, runs a funeral home at the Raven's End. The place where he lives is like a mansion, standing alone giving a horror vibe. Then comes Sam, looking for work seeing the Help Wanted sign at the out front. She's quite enchanted by seeing the mansion from inside and the position of Montgomery. He tells Sam, about his funeral home and also tells her that they keep records of how people died and why. So she insists Montgomery to tell some of the scary stories from his collection. The film consists of four stories, first is about a woman, who is at a party, and is flirting with men and picking their pockets. She then went inside a washroom and encounters something mysterious. Seconds is about a boy Jake, who seduces his freshman girls in his college, but after a bizarre one nightstand everything changes for him and he faces his worst nightmare. The third is about a man, who is tired of taking care of his sick wife and gave her pills so that she could die and no traces of the pills will be found inside her, but she never really dies. Fourth is the one told by Sam to Montgomery and has a twist, for that watch the movie.
The story and screenplay written by Ryan Spindell are not bad. He delivered some good spooky scenes, that is very gory and full of blood, which I love, and created a world that is very fascinating and dreamy. Making an anthology is very risky in a kind of way, taking too many characters and the story inside a story can be a mess sometimes. But Ryan Spindell handled everything quite well, not only well, it is interesting sometimes.
The actor's performances are good but not extraordinary. Clancy Brown as Montgomery, Jacob Elordi as Jack are the two which stands out. The cinematography by Caleb Heymann and Elie Smolkin is extraordinary. The movie looks big, and creepy in a good way. Sound design, visual and special effects, production design are in great form.
The Mortuary Collection directed by Ryan Spindell is a fine horror movie to enjoy on a Halloween weekend. The characters fall short and the film itself is a bit lengthy. It is definitely not for children but has a positive message in it. The good performances, compelling art, and production design make this a likable horror movie.
Rating:- 3/5
