Shawn Mendes : In Wonder - Review : Inspirational but could have been More!!!

Shawn Mendes : In Wonder - Film Review

Shawn Mendes: In Wonder is a documentary film portraying the life, career, and passion of Shawn Mendes toward music, and is directed by Grant Singer. It was released on 23rd November 2020 on Netflix.

“The ego comes rushing in, and it goes ‘Don’t mess up," it comes as Mendes' voice over at the beginning of the film, showing the footage from the 2019 world tour, with thousands of twinkling mobile lights. It shows his career from the start where he used to make covers of other songs, to where he's now, his huge stardom, and his accomplishment just at the age of 22.

It was 2014 when he caught the attention of one of the artist managers Andrew Gertler with one of his cover songs on the Vine app. The film gives the audience a closer look at Mendes and his life, showing his candid conversations with his mother, sister, and his brothers, some clips of the teen Shawn playing guitar, and recording videos in a small room. The major portion of the film covers Mendes' nine-month world tour of 2019, showing his enthusiasm and how he just "let go" in the middle of his performance enjoying it completely. Shawn craves at least a small amount of time to live a normal life, with his family and friends and to watch movies. He is shown as a down-to-earth and very respectful human being which kind of feels very awkward to me showing only one side of him.

What works here is showing how much Shawn is passionate about his songs and to be perfect. He is frequently shown rehearsing his songs and giving his vocal test, it was very shattering for me too at that point when Shawn and his managers have to cancel the show to avoid further more damage to his right vocal cords and continuing the show might increase of risk of damage leading to hemorrhage and then surgery. He then apologizes to his fans through his Instagram story to which he witnessed more than thousands of people gathering outside chanting Shawn's name, that was a tear-jerker for me.

His relation with Camila Cabello could have been more shown, it's always good to see them together. The film is a gift for aspiring musicians and singers, as this documentary is truly inspirational and uplifting, as Shawn Mendes is constantly shown as positive and optimistic, and surrounded by wonderful people. After so long tours and achievements, he truly deserves this documentary so that his fans get to have a closer look at what he really is as a person. In Wonder is a celebration of his achievements and his Stardom, which as a film is compelling and inspiring at the same time.
