Truth Seekers is a comedy horror web television series directed by Jim Field Smith and created by Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, James Serafinowicz, and Nat Saunders. It stars Nick Frost, Samson Kayo, Emma D'Arcy, Susan Wokoma, Malcolm McDowell, and Simon Pegg. It was released on 30th October 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
It follows Gus Roberts (Nick Frost) who works as a broadband installer for a company name "Smyle" run by Dave (Simon Pegg). Dave tells Gus to recruit and train some new people and he shouldn't work alone now, and then enters Elton John (Samson Kayo), and surprisingly they got quite friendly on the first day, but encountering something unnatural in one of the customer's house, Elton gets to know that Gus also deals with supernatural kinds of stuff and has a YouTube channel, and guess whats the name! it's Truth Seekers. Then they met Astrid (Emma D'Arcy) who is running from some glitchy shadows (not from this Earth) and wants the help of Gus and Elton to get rid of it. Astrid doesn't have any place to go now and lives with Elton and his sister Helen (Susan Wokoma), also a YouTuber, who doesn't like her. Now from here, Gus, Elton, and Astrid work together to solve mysterious cases and has to stop Dr. Peter Toynbee (Julian Barratt) who's trying to execute a sinister plan which could kill many people...so that's the summary.
Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, James Serafinowicz, and Nat Saunders have written the show. Initially, it seems to be imitating the same path as many supernatural hunters films do, but it proves you wrong. The starts with a breezy light comedy tone with a likable Gus and Elton solving different paranormal cases. They presented it as a straight forward show with some offbeat characters, but at its core, it is building up to something more grim and evil and just blows you in the last two episodes.
All the characters are solid, despite it's a very light show. Gus, whose wife Emily (Rosalie Craig) died and now lives with her father Richard. There's a scene where Richard says that Emily is his daughter and Gus says that he's been calling him father for 20 years, which is so deeply impactful. The same goes with the backstory of Elton and Astrid, which makes them so genuine and pure, you'll get attached to them, not instantly but you'll.
Nick Frost as Gus is very entertaining and has an eccentric comic timing. Malcolm McDowell as Richard is the scene-stealer and evokes many laughs. Samson Kayo is very good and likable as Elton John, and the same goes for Emma D'Arcy as Astrid who is very appealing and fresh and is delightful to watch. Susan Wokoma as Helen has given a stellar performance, she's bubbly, loud and bold, and very fun to watch. Last but not least, Simon Pegg as Dave is fun, but I hope to see more of his character in the next season, here it felt nothing more than an extended cameo.
The cinematography by Arthur Mulhern is good and excellent in some places, especially in horror scenes, which are well shot even in dark. The production design by Julian Nagel is of a high order. The background music is catchy and fits the mood of the show, and the VFX is also fantastic.
Truth Seekers is a great show, with a strong story and funny, sweet and clever writing, and the crisp editing makes this an unmissable series. The story ends in a cliffhanger and there will be more seasons, which you'll be craving after this season. Go for it, its 4 hours only. I would have given it three stars but watching the last two episodes, it amazed me, therefore an extra half stars for a mind-blowing ending.
