This Zee5 series is a remake of a popular Finnish Show Mustat Lesket. The adaptation for this Indian version is by Radhika Aanand. The title of this series is inspired by 'Black Widow', a spider, found in North America as this poisonous spider kills its partner and eats it and that's the strong resemblance with the series' main plot, except the wives here don't eat their husbands. Released in 2014, the original series was well-received throughout the world. Its fame can be gauged from the fact that ZEE5's 'Black Widows' is the eighth international remake of the show. Like the original series, its Indian version too is full of suspense, trickery, and dark and clever humor.
I must admit that the makers did a commendable job in adapting this series, and there are many examples of failed remakes released this year, but this is really an enjoyable series. The series will get your attention from the first frame and even with its long 7 hours runtime, it doesn't waste any time to get to the main story. This series has a slick narration and a tight screenplay which makes it impossible for you to think about anything else as the twists and turns are coming from everywhere.
The three central characters are strongly established but still, there's something missing that makes it hard for you to root for them. Maybe it's the humor that really doesn't connect you to the three women and the pain and torture they have been suffering. Nevertheless, it's has a fresh feel to it as the Indian audience has seen nothing like this before.
The humor always works and the messed up situations are always coming frequently as there are so so many characters and that's the strength of the show. Despite so many actors all have got sufficient screentime and no one seems to be left behind and that's where it wins, even though it's a remake.
Mona Singh is a great actress and here she did a great job in playing the intelligent Veera. Swastika Mukherjee is a treat to watch. Never seen her in a glam role before and here was overpowering and has a strong presence. Shamita Shetty has made a comeback with a BANG! Even though her character is kind of naive one, but that's where she scores the full marks. She successfully brings laughs to your face and is very entertaining and looked beautiful. Sharad Kelkar is impressive as Jatin, and no doubt it's an easy role for him. He dominated Laxmii and Akshay Kumar with his performance, this is just a light role for him and he did it effortlessly. Parambrata Chattopadhyay is always a delight to watch and he did a fine job. Raima Sen did full justice to the evil vicious Inaaya Thakur, a pharma company owner, who ruthlessly kills people who come in her way or her money.
The cinematography by Subhankar Bhar is stunning and doesn't look dull like any other Zee5 series. The series has a colorful, rich, and vibrant look and for that, the credit also goes to the production design by Namrata G Rungta which is of high quality. The original score by Aditya Pushkarna is terrific. The editing by Sumit Chowdhury is crisp and sharp.
Black Widows is another best thing from Zee5 after Taish. It is a complete entertainment package and even with its long 7 hours runtime, it's easy to complete it in one go. The humor and the twists and turns work for the favor of the show. Mona Singh, Swastika Mukherjee and Shamita Shetty are in great form here and doesn't offer a single second of boredom. It's a perfect binge-worthy material.
