Unhinged - Review

Unhinged is an American action thriller film directed by Derrick Borte. It stars Russell Crowe, Caren Pistorius, and Gabriel Bateman in lead roles. It was released on ZeePlex on 20th November 2020 and is now available on BluRay.

The film starts by showing a maniac man (Russell Crowe) getting out of his car, and knocking on the door of a house. A man answers but he kills the man and also kills the woman and sets the house on fire. The scene cuts to Rachel (Caren Pistorius), a newly divorced mother, late for her work, drives her son Kyle (Gabriel Bateman) to his school. But, so sad, she is stuck now in traffic, and while taking another path she honks at a pickup truck that was standing at a green light. The truckman (Russell Crowe) follows her car and demands an apology from Rachel as she was rude to him. At a gas station, the man tracks her and steals her phone while she was inside. A customer walks outside with Rachel to protect her from that maniac, but instead, he hit him with his truck and runs through his body, killing him. He calls Rachel to say that who's next in her contact list she wants dead. Here, Tom Hunter, that maniac man doesn't want an apology and wants to teach Rachel a lesson by killing all her close ones. So, how will she stop her?

Carl Ellsworth has written the script which is taut and crisp and has 80 minutes of runtime. The writer perfectly depicted the "road rage" disasters in the United States and delivering a monster in the form of Tom Hunter, who ruthlessly kills people in the most brutal way possible. You don't develop any kind of sympathy towards him, even though Rachel was rude, and given he killed his wife and his boyfriend in the first scene which truly helps you to fully hate him.

There are many movies that show the human sides of the villainous characters which work but most don't, and here showing him as a monster perfectly fits. But that should have been done more effectively in the case of Rachel, who is a newly divorced young mother and has a 15-year-old son to look for. Her feelings don't come as real and tangible through a couple of scenes where she's shown living a messy life.

Despite all of that, the film is perfectly fine. If you see, it doesn't really have that intention to get the audience emotionally hooked in these shallow characters. You will get engaged in the thrilling portion of the film which is no doubt very gripping and some deliver truly outstanding sequences, like when Tom went to met the lawyer Andy (Jimmi Simpson), or the car chasing part which almost covers a major chunk of the film's runtime. Whatever is on the crust of it, you won't be disappointed with that a bit.

Russell Crowe as Tom Hunter, the unhinged man, is terrific and terrifying at the same time. From The Nice Guys to Fathers and Daughters, he seems too skilled for this thin role, but still, he shines throughout and his act can give you nightmares. Caren Pistorius as Rachel impresses more and more as the film proceeds. Not everyone who unknowingly gets caught up in these situations will have the power to fight back, and her character did full justice if you think like that. Though she fights for her son's life and stands against him at the climax. Talking about the son, Gabriel Bateman did a good job as Kyle and has lent strong support.

The cinematography by Brendan Galvin is a brilliant aspect to witness in the film. He captures every frame and every action with perfection. The editing of the film is also worth applauding, with a crisp 80-90 minutes runtime, the film moves with great speed without even giving you a second to think of something else. The music is also thrilling and suits the mood of the film.

All in all, Unhinged, if you remove your critic's eye, is a perfect time pass film which you can enjoy anytime. Russell Crowe as unhinged is a treat to see, and the thrilling sequences are a hundred percent thrilling which delivers many edge-of-the-seat moments and many twists and turns which are more than enough to hook you up till the end. Don't miss it.
