Gullak is an Indian comedy-drama series created by Shreyansh Pandey. It stars Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Harsh Mayar, Sunita Rajwar, and Shivankit Singh Parihar. The brand new second season has a total of 5 episodes and was released on 15th January 2021 on Sony LIV.
The story, as you know from season one, is of the middle-class Mishra family of North India. The head of the house is Shanti Mishra (Geetanjali Kulkarni). Her husband Santosh Mishra (Jameel Khan) is a clerk at the electricity department and has two sons Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) and Aman Mishra (Harsh Mayar). There is also a neighbor Bittu ki mummy (Sunita Rajwar), whose husband has earned a lot of money from the bribe.
Annu Mishra is still jobless. Days are passing by roaming around the local leaders so that he could get a permit for starting a gas agency of his own. Aman Mishra is underestimated at home, but he rattles off a different story. It is a total saga of the efforts of the middle class, which are extraordinary from their side but fall ordinary in the race of the world.
Written by Durgesh Singh, the second season is nothing different from its earlier season and the good thing is that it doesn't feel stale or old either. The Mishra family here also, is dealing with their day to day life problems and crises but how they try to stay positive is what you need to take from this show. As you know, here the characters are the backbone of the show that make you sit through the thin plot yet effective storyline.
Shanti Mishra is just like any middle-class mother who can work all day and night without thinking about her health and she is upset as no men in the house are helping her in her chores but she won't let them do her work either. Annu is still jobless but here he's not just blabbering, the makers showed his emotional side, the anger, the feelings, and the responsibilities, his character is amazingly written for this second season.
You would think that the episodes regarding the electricity bill, kitty party, writing a grocery list and India Pakistan match will make this show worth a watch? The little things in the show are the highlight here, like to speculate when ants are moving near the bathroom then someone in the house is diabetic, a machine to apply sindoor, or a sabji masala chicken, or the confusion between what is added in Dahi Vada, is it salt or red chili powder?
The bond between the brothers, Annu, and Aman is more coherent. They fight with each other but they still love each other and there's is also a beautiful scene where elder Annu tells Aman not to make mistakes that he committed. "Aapko nahi pata" iconic moments are still there and this Gullak was very much needed as after seeing so many crime thrillers, this cozy relatable family drama comes as a breeze.
Jameel Khan as the father is excellent. His silent face speaks more and has done full justice to his part. Geetanjali Kulkarni is a delight to watch. She's terrific in her humor though being sarcastic. Harsh Mayar as Aman did a great job though he did not look like a class 10th student, but he's believable in his acts. The scene-stealer is undoubtedly Vaibhav Raj Gupta. His character is the only one that showed some variation, and a range of feelings of Annu. He is simply terrific as joyful and equally convincingly in the emotional one. Sunita Rajwar again impresses as the nosy neighbor and with the energy she enters the frame is impeccable.
The cinematography by Anand Bansal is very good and the music by Anurag Saika fits the vibe of the show. The production design is yet again spot on and very appropriate. The dialogues are crackling, there's one, the father says, "In India, the compounder who has more than 10 years experience is a doctor". The editing by Gaurav Gopal Jha is sharp.
Gullak Season 2 directed by Palash Vaswani is nothing different from season one. It is longer, nearly 2 hours 40 minutes long and the writing and characters are enough to keep you invested in this heartwarming show. The comedy and emotions both works in this show and hit you as you get easily connected with these characters. There's nothing more to say, watch it, with your family and friends, anyone and anytime, this Mishra family will remind you of your home and will make you enjoy the little things in your life. So, yes, it's worth a watch.
