A Week Away is an American musical teen drama film directed by Roman White. It stars Bailee Madison, Kevin Quinn, David Koechner, and Sherri Shepherd. The film was released on March 26, 2021, on Netflix.
Will (Kevin Quinn) is an orphan and has lived in 22 foster homes and attended 7 schools in six years and gets in trouble when he tried to steal a cop's car. The child services are left with no option but to send him to juvie and then enters Kristin (Sherri Shepherd) who works organizing summer camps with her son George (Jahbril Cook) and offers a chance to Will that he should spend his time in summer camp with them.
Quite obvious, he chose to spend his week in a summer camp at Camp Aweegaway where he meets Avery (Bailee Madison) who's the daughter of the camp's organizer (David Koechner), and is beguiled by her. But he has tried to hide his original identity that who is he really and introduce himself as a cousin of George. But there is an evil character, Sean (Iain Tucker) who later finds out the reality of Will and....will he tell Avery about who really Will is? Will the truth affects what Avery and Will have for each other? For that, you've to spend 90 minutes in this summer camp.
Written by Kali Bailey, Alan Powell, and Gabe Vasquez, A Week Away works as just another Netflix feel-good film with a little bit of God and his moralities drizzled here and there. The writers and director know what they are trying to make and they unapologetically do that without wasting time without delivering issues that might go over your head. It's a musical so characters abruptly erupt singing and dancing and that really looked good and you might think to groove on that too.
The songs are nice and expressive and everything fits in the right place. Though you might cringe at some point where you'll feel that film is too sweet to handle, the love track of Will and Avery is cliched and that of George and Presley (Kat Conner Sterling) is too adorable but why are they like this each other? Guess, just to evoke some laughs. They spend all their time together, are having fun, and playing games right after waking up in the morning - yeah too much dreamy but it's a movie!! Just enjoy it, don't use your brain on this.
The performances were reasonably good. Bailee Madison shines as Avery. She appears energetic and full of enthusiasm just like the mood of the film. She is incredibly good especially in the scene where she follows Will to the road and tells him about her feelings. Kevin Quinn as Will is just about average, looking at his chiseled face reminded me of a younger version of someone but I don't know who. He's decent whereas Jahbril Cook brings comic relief as George. Kat Conner Sterling as Presley, Iain Tucker as Sean, Sherri Shepherd as Kristin, and David Koechner as David did well in their parts.
The cinematography by James King is perfect and the film looks refreshing and amazing and colorful. Especially the singing and dancing sequences, it has been picturized beautifully. The production design and art direction are perfect and the background score is good and the music by Adam Watts is outstanding. I was humming the "best thing ever" song after the film ended, it's too good. The editing by Parker Adams is sharp.
So if you're looking for something sweet and cheesy this weekend, A Week Away might be your correct pick. The visuals and the songs and the performances are done well but the problem is that we have seen enough of these sweet and happy films. I guess Netflix will not stop offering us these films as they work as a therapy to many where you might find it too cute to avoid. It's correct, there is no harm in watching these uplifting and cheerful film unless it becomes more awkward after some years.
